Default 5mm Lexan hatch fitted..Not sure on the 924 GTS Rear Deep Spoiler

As title...

I'm not sure I like & want this..........

It looks too deep for the skinny 924 body.........

I've never before, but think I may consider no spoiler

but with a slim lip like this ?

But I need to cover up the sides and back where the spoiler holes are..
Does anyone know if the trim from the non spoiler tailgate fits over this ?
OR is the non spoiler frame different?

This Frame was off a 944

the addition of the spoiler on the 924 body (924 turbo?) dropped the drag coefficient a few points.
i think from Cd 0.37 to 0.34 or something like that.

it really cleans up the air behind the car, makes the car more aerodynamic = faster top-end and better fuel economy.

there must be a reason they made the tail bigger on the 944 vs the 924T, since the roofline (airflow over the top of the car and sides of windows) did not change. i don't think the fat fenders would affect air flow at hatch level.

pick which one you prefer the look of, but run a spoiler, regardless.

although the GTS one gives you a nice shelf to leave tools on and eat your lunch off!

Ok, Thanks, Interesting..............

I don't get Aero, you'd think a smooth bottom would be low drag and good, and a lip would stall and as the name suggests "Spoil" the flow..

Doesn;t a rear spoiler stop lift ? and if so lift from where the front or rear?

I'll get a rubber 944 one I think and see how that looks.......

I don't even think a Bridge type would work either...

I'm pleased the lexan fits well and seems quite strong.....as they are mostly for Racers and I've heard the fit is not ideal for street......

with a spoiler, the "cloud" at the back is much reduced.

and for some anecdotal advice...
i notice a difference in "stability" or "planted" feel at highway speeds (70mph+) with the sunroof cracked open versus totally closed. i imagine the tilted sunroof is causing airflow over the roof to shoot off at some angle, rather than running down to the spoiler and pushing down the back end. it definitely feels more wiggly.

"spoiling" the air is good. The spoiler may provide some downforce, but the "spoil" refers to breaking up the air flow that is causing low pressure, aka drag, behind the car.

I wonder if they were just trying harder to lower the Cd on the 944 since it was higher than the 924, and therefor went with the bigger spoiler.

Sound like your sunroof is acting as a spoiler to your spoiler.

I kind of like the no-spoiler look, personally. I believe that the hatch trim from a non-spoiler 924 will fit, but I'm not 100% sure. But .37 to .34 Cd isn't an insignificant difference.

Where did you get the Lexan hatch? My hatch glass is delaminating and I've thought of going with Lexan to save weight but my car is not a racer. I'd be worried about fitment, scratching/hazing, and being able to defrost the window in cold weather.

I found this on the net:

"The 924 body style has a better drag coefficient and thus a higher top speed than the 944, that is the reason for the detuned 924S motor (keeping things fair). "

The original 924S has the smaller depth Rubber spoiler unyet the car before I ripped everything out! was very stable at 100mph...

I would not want the car feeling a bit "pitchy" because of no spoiler at 100+mph, if it's even more stable then I'll consider an about turn and live with the large dishy GTS Spoiler!

For me Performance is always a priority of looks.

I got a 2nd hand Glass 944 hatch and got a local windscreen place to remove the glass and the rubber spoiler.

I then stripped and powdercoated the frame in satin black.

I ordered the lexan in 5mm, anti scratch and a grey tint...the works!

From Plastics for Performance : They do many varients for the racers, different thicknesses, flat or curved and tinted and anti scratch etc..

http://www.plastics4performance.com/...indow-kit.html

THe Spoiler was from another UK company where I also got the fibre wings, bonnet, sunroof panel. front & Rear bumpers and badge panel.

Club Autosposrt http://www.clubautosport.co.uk/

The rear window does not have wiper or defroster etc...that's the negative bit, the weight is however approx. 12kg compared to the 27kg original.......

did your hatch have 3rd brake light or anything extra?
i weighed my hatch at 52 lbs (23.5 kg) with glass, frame, 944 rubber spoiler, and hinges installed.

google porsche 924/944 Zender. They did a few spoilers and valences for our cars. You'll need a lot of luck actually sourcing one though!

they made this type
https://rennlist.com/forums/924-931-...r-spoiler.html

And I'm sure they had another slimmer type.

I have had a 924CGTS rear spoiler on order from the US since before Christmas so your photos are very exciting for me! You're lucky being able to use lexan. In NZ it's strictly for competition cars, road legal or not, so once you have lexan windows or a cage you must have a log book and club level licence at the minimum.

I hope you balance the lighter rear end with a composite bonnet? The best thing about my previous 924T's CGT body kit was the fibreglass bonnet- using the latch lever to open the bonnet and the struts raising the bonnet by themselves quickly but at a nice controlled speed. There's a guy near me who is very fastidious and is working on his own 944 turbo cup bonnet with recessed bonnet pins. If I can get one off him I will switch to 968 hinges. If you remember from your 968, the strut is shorter and comes off the hinge so it takes up less room that the 944 strut arrangement.
