Default Strong Fumes

I just recently purchased a 944 that smells as though it's running extremely rich as it's producing strong fumes. Initially it wasn't as bad, but now that I refueled to a higher octane the smell has become unbearable. I can let the car idle in my driveway and smell the fumes from within the 2nd floor of my house.

The car idles at 60mpg and has a new FPR. I guess the next thing to check would be vac lines? The previous owner did mention that the timing/cam belt needs to be set to factory specs, but I don't think that could be it? Any other ideas?

What does it mean to "idle at 60mpg"?

I came across a post stating the MPG should read 60mpg at idle once the car is warm. Any lower would be an indication that it's running rich. If true, I guess this would just be a test for the idle mixture anyway and my problem is continuous, at idle and running.

Two things you said raised flags for me: timing belt needs service and vacuum lines. I would be real uneasy about the belts condition and afraid to run the engine until they are replaced. Second, the vacuum lines should be replaced with new, silicone ones available from a couple of sources. They're pretty easy to replace and pretty much necessary in these older cars. Thirdly, I'm thinking you should think about replacing the O2 sensor. When it's disconnected, the car will run very rich so if it's failed, same thing.

I ended up taking it to the dealership to get sorted. Turns out the timing/cam belt was a notch off and they also adjusted the idle. Seems to be running strong now with no fumes.

at idle its not mpg, it registers on the Gal/hour scale instead.
