I would rhino-line the interior or something similar...this thing will be LOUD and unbearable on the street for more than an hour or so...better have a thick-padded helmet.

I've driven several stripped interior 944s and didn't think it was too bad. Louder for sure. But that is kinda part of the fun of a minimalist build. Not really any louder than old school cars.

I dig the rear bumper. The stock bumper weighs a billion pounds . While I prefer the sleeker and lighter look of the euro inspired fiberglass race bumpers, I love this low buck old school, hot rodding solution.

howabout taking the bumper, cutting some big sections out of it (leaving a matrix of material left for a structure) and then stretching a skin of some sort over it like an old airplane? then it'd look complete but be much lighter..

Good question. I don't have a scale though... when all is done I'll weigh the whole car & post that info.

Oh la la!!! This is a thing of beauty! Thanks for the link to you pics.

Regarding glare:
-do you wear glasses
-have you driven this car at night?

(I wear glasses & suffer a lot at night with glare, so was wondering if the sweetness that is white interior would reek havoc).

-note: is that a mini mat for your heels? I'd like to steal that idea if you don't mind. "kilograms are made of grams" I keep telling myself.

The 968 I just bought, which is black, will have a white interior, as well, since the contrast makes it easier to find things (e.g. fire extinguisher/release) in the event of a fire.

Here's a shot of mine. It is a race car, but for whatever reference. Dash is a home made fiberglass one wrapped in a thin vinyl. There are more pictures on my Photobucket page, http://s569.photobucket.com/user/67K...?sort=3&page=3. Cage is on pages 3 and 4.

Thank you very much for your comments Cole. I started with the idea for say 20-26 holes... but turned into an all day event drilling 230. I wish I started with that plan because the holes aren't evenly spaced as a result, hence looking into "skinning" it.

i like it with the wheel-well removed, the exposed trans case just looks cool IMO..

did the turn-down quiet the car at all?

By the time I had it the way I liked it, I was married, and I wanted to drive the car more..ie take the wife out for dinner, take it to work, vacations, cottage trips etc and I found I actually drove it less, as it became noisy, smelled of fuel/exhaust, and was hard on the back for long trips. I then spent another 10 years making it more comfortable, and another 5 years making more hp to cope with the extra weight again. I would have done it differently had I known then what I know now.
It was one heck of a beast on the track though, and I had no fear of vipers and their ilk.
Good luck and have fun working on the car just the same!!
These are the words of an experienced practical person. I know what you say is genuine, having previously lightened my car (a bit... the easy stuff) and found many of the same things you talk about here. This time I'm taking more extreme measures & with hopefully find solutions & compromises that are to my liking. But mostly no half measures, and we'll let this thing run it's race.

Turn down did nothing.

A gutted car is hot, loud and uncomfortable on the street. Lol. But you know that!

I'd also stop driving it in the salt if you plan to track it. Salt (or rather the mixture they use) degrades metal extremely quickly. And it gets everywhere.

Get an AWD beater instead.

Borrow a scope and look inside your rocker panels.

Great job so far!
Don't weld the seams -- it isn't legal in a lot of race classes that 944s run in, and there's no going back from it so it would limit your potential market for the car when done if you decided to sell. A good cage (or even half-cage) will stiffen a 944 way more, anyway.

Thanks. I wear polarized sunglasses when I drive, but also contacts. Car is only driven during the day......it's a dedicated track car.

Mat is just grip tape from a local skateboard shop. Pretty common with race cars to have that.

Huge day for me. Applying chassis saver rust primer to the interior. Finally.
