Bringing my 944 back to life
#136
Hi there MAZDAVERX7.
I had a wonderful time reading through your thread here. I even reminisced with my wife about you finding out about the previous owner.
I am a new owner of a 1983 944 and am giving it all of the love and attention it deserves. Fixing what I can, learning what else I can fix, and giving it a good home. The care for the car is as pleasurable as the driving.
Anyway, thanks for posting here. You've been inspiring.

Would love to see pics of your car! Do you know any history on your car or do you have any maintenance receipts or the original warranty booklet?

This is very true.
Rennbay sells the harness (if I remember correctly) and there's a trick to installing it.
His directions make very little sense.
(Also, if you order from them, chances are they will deliver the item to the opposite part of the country you are on), but, hey...
The harness also fixes problem of the light switch burning up and setting your car on fire.
Light switch.
On fire.
Nice work, buddy.
I have the same model and year 944 in exactly the same color.
I've had it for the past 20+years.
Do some more and let me know when you get to the fuse blocks...

The fuse blocks both have connections that need re-soldered. They are picky and the wiring must be jiggled every so often to get the lighting system to work properly. This is a winter project for sure!

mazdaverx7,
I unfortunately got no history when I bought the car. I have been curious about where she came from. I have adopted a repair shop here in Seattle (Gerber Motorsports, they are wonderful people). They told me they knew the car from 10 years ago and that the owner from way back took very good care. Other than that I will just imagine a little old lady used to drive it very slow :-)
Here are some Pictures:

Your 944's looks amazing! Thank for sharing the pics! I have a late 85 thats identical to your car right down to the Fuchs wheels! Your car looks to have been well cared for.

She has been lucky with her past owners. After fixing a pricey issue (fumey old filler/tank pieces and a tank test/clean) I have been replacing interior screws and plastic pieces, cleaning up wiring, and just little jobs in general. The cam tower gaskets need replacing in the future and that should make the rest of the old car odor go away and keep all the oil where it belongs. The leaks aren't big so it can wait a little while. After XMAS I plan on replacing the front and rear shocks.
So all in all not bad.
The paint isn't perfect but very pretty. I'm exercising patience to not just fix everything all at once but just a little here and there.
The learning has been wonderful and I think this spring is going to have my little red girl running very smoothly.

Forgot to update when I got the car all back together. Still has random no starts. Replacing the speed and reference sensors helped a little, but I think I should install new units.

Still having a hard time getting the engine started. I may have to replace the speed and reference sensor bracket and install new sensors. Its about time the car comes out from under the cover and has its belt inspection and oil change for the year. Would really like to enjoy the car this summer!

Have you looked for cracked solder joints in the dme? It's old, and has some heat running through it... just a thought.
I too, love threads like this, watching progress happen. It's cool.
