944 Spoiler on a 968 Hatch....
My '89 S2 came with the 968 Hoop spoiler. Going by model year i naturally assumed it had been converted from a 944 Rubber spoiler. Since my preference was the original look, I sourced a 944 Rubber spoiler and fittings.
However, once the 968 spoiler was taken off, to i find the hatch itself is the 968 type, with 4 integrated metal tabs on the frame. the Rubber Spoiler will not fit as long as the 4 tabs are present.
I realize it is fairly simple to source a correct used 944 hatch in the US. But I am located in SRI LANKA. so logistically it is rather difficult to have one brought.
So my only choices are to remain with the 968 spoiler or attempt to modify the hatch.
Any idea how feasible to remove the 4 tabs and drill corresponding holes on the thin framer? All this wihle still attached to the glass... :-).
I suppose i can separate the frame from the glass to simplify matters. But right now it is attached to the glass rather firmly so i am reluctant to mess with that.
Appreciate any and all input, Thanks.

Wow... this IS a first. Most folks would kill to get that spoiler for their stock equipped hatch.
Those tabs will come off easily and its easy enough to drill the holes you need. Just work carefully and make sure you don't catch an edge of the glass with the drill bit. That glass is under extreme tension and will shatter if you aren't careful, but if you work slowly, you won't have a problem.
Let me know if you want to sell the 968 type spoiler.
Regards,

The 1991 S2 came with a hoop spoiler. I would leave it if I were you.... It looks better, provides better rear visibility and probably weighs less. I would hazard to guess that the hoop spoiler provides more downforce as well?
If you are bent on selling it I would be very intersted in the old trim pieces and spoiler. I would be glad to ship you a stock rubber one.

His car is an 89 though. It should have the rubber spoiler and not the '91 S2- 968 spoiler on it. I like factory look as much as the next guy, but I think the 968 spoiler on my S2 just looks awesome.
Maybe see if someone can unmount the glass from a rubber spoiler hatch, and ship the whole frame without the glass, and when it arrives, you can put your glass back in? Shipping would still be outrageous though.
Post some pics of the car!

@ sh944 - Thanks for the input. I will go ahead and try the modification. Hoping to use a manual/hand drill for better control.
Yes, i have had plenty of interest for the 968 Spoiler!
Will contact those interested, once i have shipping cost estimates to the US.
Too bad i can't just trade the entire hatch :-(
I understand how most people feel about the 968 Spoiler, But for me the Rubber spoiler is an inherent part of the 944. I'm not an originality freak, but i think it looks so unique. Especially in the current context where too many Wing-type spoilers abound!
Here's a post i made just as the car was going into resto. Some photos there...

Car went in Sept 1, 2006. Was promised completion in 2.5 months.
End is in sight now, but 9 damn months elapsed !
