44's are ok for a 2.5, would be too much for 2.0.
Driven both stock 1.7 and 2.0 and the 2.0 is quicker, but in the real world, that Camry next to you at the light will smoke you if he wants to in either one... the reality of a 40 year old car... but I can guarantee you that you will be having more fun.

Also agree with above, most 914's are NOT stock and if the tub is solid, that is the most important thing for resale. Look at your own experience looking for one...

I see your point, but I think the same can be said for 911''s , now look at them even the impact bumper (74-77) are starting to go up in value..the 73 2.0 land 914-6 are both starting to climb in there originL stock form
^^ I agree from the collector car hobby stand point, but (again, I'm going to offend people) I'm not sure how 'collectable' a 1.7 914 is...that was more my point. If it was a 914-6, or a Can-Am car, yes, originality can be important. but most 914's are bought to drive and have fun with, so 'customization' is rampant. and many times, very tasteful or 'normal' customization increases the value (like converting to side shift, increasing displacement, etc). Case in point: Our car Huey (yellow/blue one in my avatar) started life as a 1.7. Now it's a 3.2/6 conversion, 5 lug wheels, flares, roll cage, stripped interior, etc. etc. etc....I've been offered over $30k for it (not selling btw). it would NEVER be worth that in stock 1.7 form...ever...

At 0 to 60's somewhere in the 10 to 12 second range, yeah, I don't expect to be smoking any Camry's.
On the other hand, I may be able to smoke a few SmartForTwos!!!
I wonder how many HP that stroked 2.5 one has, and what 0-60 is... any guesses? Not that this would be the over-riding purchase factor, but inquiring minds want to know.

Hey guys, my search has been tireless... almost OCD searching of all the places where a 914 may be sold.
Here's my current find. I have limited info other than these pix I got from the seller.... it looks to me like the front and rear bumpers have some minor separation... other than that, looks good. I am told no rust.. but, I need to arrange a personal inspection of the car.
Any items of concern you see?
Seller is out of town for a couple days, but he is a friend of a friend. So, the car comes with a very high pedigree. I will check it out as soon as seller gets back in town later this week.
It's a 1970 1.7, and I really wanted a 1973 2.0. But, this car seems in excellent condition. I was told, a "9" on a 1-10 scale, by a concourse judge.
Do you think I will regret buying a 1.7 (as opposed to a 2.0)? In some ways, I wish I had spent more on my 996, and bought a 997 or a 996 Turbo. And, my Cayman is a base, wish I had a Cayman S. But, alas, have other bills to pay....
P.S. What do you think of that bumper issue? Look at the left side of the photos for front and rear.
Buying Porsches has become an evil sickness....

Only downside of '71 is the tailshifter, and it ain't cheap to convert to side shifter. I know that from experience but is doable. And definitely worth it!
As far as gaps, my original '71 which has never had body work, has "factory supplied" irregular gaps on rear trunk lid. I guess Hans had too many beers before he put it on way back when...
As we've said over and over, rust is the issue. Otherwise that car looks nice. Jake Raby can make the old 1.7 a LOT better...

need everything from shift lever back including part of transaxle. You may try Patrick or Tangerine who do a lot of 914 stuff to see if they sell something like a kit.
A friend and I many years ago bought a total roach 914 just for parts- all I wanted was all the shift stuff and the transaxle and he took the rest. Just make sure it is a side shifter car!!
Prob not cheap these days... I did it back in the mid 80's!!

Do you have yourself a really good air-cooled Porsche mechanic? You need to get someone who really knows these cars to advise you. I use Bob Grigsby up here in the SF Bay Area and he loves these cars as much as we do. Someone like that can tell you whats involved in the tranny conversion and can really inspect the car for you.
I bought mine from Orange County and some guys down there referred me to a local shop for a PPI. I have to say that the guy really sucked. He couldn't tell that the first gear synchro was shot???
Fortunately, that was the worst of it. It cost me some serious $$$ to go through the tranny but now it is good for a 901!
So find someone you can trust and take their advice!
I would still hold out for what you wanted. I am glad I got the 73 2.0. I think this car will do well over the longer term.

Yes, I have an excellent 914 mechanic locally. A buddy of mine who had a 914 used him a lot, and I have talked to that mechanic many times. He's the type of guy that can swap out 914 motors while blind-folded.
I'll post more when I have additional info regarding the orange car.

^^^^ I thought Tom told me it was a '73. Yes, I think he said it has a side-shift, but when I found that it is a '70, I figured it must be a tail shift. Still waiting to hook up with the seller to get all my questions answered. If I don't hear in a day or two, I'll bug Tom again. As you know, he's a pretty low-key guy, so I don't want to be a PITA.
Look closely at the black part of the lower bumper trim just in front of the front right (passenger ) tire, and similar just above the tail pipe. I was also wondering if that passenger side pop-up light looks out of alignment. I know that alignment of this is an easy fix... I just want to make sure not due to damage.
I'm not able to see the bumper issue but the gaps on the frunk lid look a little off. I guess it could be the angle of picture though.
