Default 914-6 2.4 vs 3.6

I have a great 2.4 liter now running in my 914-6 conversion for a couple of years

I love it

I am tempted to sell the 2.4 Liter (what an awesome engine) and swap out for a 3.6

I have no clue how - howmuch$$

It takes a lot of cutting to do the 3.6 in there. If you want it would be a CRAZY fast 914. I had a 2.4 S in my 914 and it was AWESOME. But I would have probably put in a 3.0 in the near future if I hadn't sold it.

since i did all the conversion work already - would a 3.0 be plug and play

I have ridden in one 3.6 conversion. The one in Excellence over the last 10 months or so. It was AMAZING beyond description. Acceleration that has you wanting to slap your own engine no matter what it is...
The red car pictured is a 3.6 as well with more of a racer with license plates attitude. The black one is the end result of the Excellence series of articles...

I can't even imagine how fast a 3.6 would be. I have been in a 2.7 and a 3.0 and they were awesome!!!! Are you thinking 964 or 993 motor?

I had a 914/6 for 20 years that I restored and improved. 2,0, 2.2, 2.7, 3.0, and finally a 3.2 all used carbs, and I was ready to build the ultimate 3.4 with carbs, I collected many parts, finally started buying all new parts (P/C's 98mm Mahle expensive), new cams, gaskets, bearings, layshaft. crankshaft gears, heads were 3.2's with new SS valves everything was ready for assembly and I was faced with which carbs to buy and I was sitting there one night accepting the fact it was $3000 for new PMO's - lets not forget the B&B SS headers w/heat, and a Vellios kit - and I decided to buy instead a 95 993 engine with european brain, chip and correct harness. I looked at the fact it would start easily, get great gas mileage when cruising, never need a valve adjustment, have tons of torque, and make easy 300 hp. But then it is 914/6 gt kit, more of this and more of that -- I had a very nice 914/6 and just could not bring myself to undo years of work to restore only to cut and start over again. Car was sold and now I plan on using that motor in a 964 CAB, which is a significant upgrade for that car.

-- but I still miss my 914/6.

I am considering a 993 engine....
or even a boxter engine possibly

Boxster? Are you prepared to redesign the rear suspension due to the engine being too wide? I am not saying it cannot be done, but that is just one of the realities you would have to deal with...

i am really looking for an easy upgrade from the 2.4

i want fuel injection and an A/C and more power
but stay air cooled porsche

AC? Really? I would avoid it as I think you will be dealing with way more problems then it is worth. I am sure I am not the only one here that will say that too.

From my understanding adding A/C to 914s is an undertaking. I saw a writeup of someone who has done it without hacking up too much of the car. It was on an original six. But, I can't find it now to save the life of me. Go figure

A 3.6 isn't plug and play. You have to cut the rear bulkhead some to make the intake fit. Then you have to adapt either the 901 tranny to it, or adapt the car to a 915, or come up with a good cable setup to run a G50. None of which is cheap.

I'm not sure how AC would fit. Not sure why you would want that in a car with a 3.6.

Oh - be prepared to do some chassis work if you drive it hard. It will start to come apart.

Not sure how you use the car (street, Track, Race etc) but dropping in the heavier 3.6 and transmission may effect other things... like suspension balance and the desire for brake upgrades and perhaps even an LSD if you don't already have one. I have ridden in only 1 3.6 (964 based motor) 914 and yes, it was quick.. but yes, it ate transmissions quite steadily.

Is your current 2.4 injectected or carbed? Why the desire for FI? I've always loved the 3.0 and 3.2 engined 914s I've been in. A 3.0 with carbs is my ideal motor.
