fishy?
Firstly let me say hi to all, as I have just registered -after years of stealthily perusing- the forum. Going through an aggressive mid-life crisis phase, I am looking to add a 930 to my life and realise a childhood dream (a cliché but clichés become such for a reason).
Long story short, as I have been surfing classifieds in the UK a newly advertised 79 930 popped up. First impressions from the photography and narrative were impressive. Then I looked at the posted serials and they look odd:
Chassis: 911930xxxx & Engine: 639xxxx
On first inspection I would say these are from a 911SC but I am no expert and definitely do not know of any special numbering conventions that Porsche may have used back then for RHD cars. Would be surprised though!
Any thoughts???

930 VINs for 1979 models start with 930980xxxx where "xxxx" is a serialized production number. 930 motor numbers for 1979 should start with either 679xxxx (RoW cars) or 689xxxx (US cars). "xxxx", like the VIN is a serialized production number.
The first six of your VIN would indicate that the car is a 1979 911SC coupe if I read the decoder specs correctly (my Morgan book is at home).

thanks Toby. Exactly what I thought too. Only reason why this would be different would be a known numbering anomaly or different convention for early RHD cars, but that would not make any sense. Have seen earlier and later cars following the coding rules to the...number.

Toby is right on... I've been watching 930 prices lately to estimate "current market value" for insurance - and this was just on Bat - which is a 79 930 and has a terrific image in the listing of what the VIN should look like:

Hope this helps - and keep us posted on your search!

thank you John. I have checked w the local club and also put known and advertised cars under the microscope when it comes to vins, stickers etc and this car just does not add up. Life goes on!
