Aluminum Foil for Exhaust Leak
At a recent DE event, I had planned to take the time to recheck the Motorsport X pipe clamps to see if they were tight enough. Too late for one side! I had already blown the fiberwrap out of one. Actually I had suspected that something was amiss as I starting hearing the leak. Shoulda checked earlier!
I brought extra brakes, oil, tools, but no extra fiberwrap. So off to the concession stand I go. They gave me a 2 foot long sheet of aluminum foil and I folded it a couple of dozen times to generate some thickness. Installed & reclamped. It lasted the remainder of the weekend and the long drive home. Still in there and no exhaust leak.
May be Mickey Mousing it, but it eliminated an exhaust leak and allowed me to fully enjoy my DE weekend.
Anyone ever consider including a roll of aluminum foil in your just-in-case boxes? Yeah, me neither.

Dave Lomas mailed my muffler wrap to me separately. Maybe he could do the same for you?
If you try the foil, you will probably be surpirsed at how much foil it requires. The foil I "borrowed" was extra wide commercial sized. I folded it accordion style thinking it would be the most durable and pliable that way. Maybe I was right?
I too am a happy owner. My car looks just like yours 'cept yours is a euro, eh? I would be very curious to hear how different our visibly similar cars sound with X pipes installed.
Anyhow, I am thinking about adding X + Reynolds Aluminim Foil to my sig line. Not really.

Is it the correct sealing solution anyway given the issue?

X pipe inside diameter is just about the same as the resonator pipes outside diameter. The resonators' pipes go in an inch or two, as I recall.
How would you go about sealing the two? What you consider to be correct? I am thinking that a shim/sleeve with one side cut full length would do the trick, but you could still have a teeny tiny exhaust leak.
The woven wrap material seems like the easiest solution while leaving all X-back exhaust system options wide open. It looks kinda like a tie-down strap. If you install it, cinch the clamp down tight and recinch it later.
For anyone that is interested, I plan to dyno in the spring. I think the alumininum foil may be good for an extra 2 HP but since I only have it on one side, make that +1...

Hey James - Are you sure you need the Fiberwrap? I have no leaks without them?
Also, did a web search on various types of Exhaust Band Clamps and none of them show any kind of additional seal?

K1................I never received the fibrewrap with my Motorsport X; I believe Canadian customs has it and my exhaust leaks at the X/ resonator joint. I'm going to try an exhaust foil wrap to make up the diamenter difference and reclamp.

Aggressive braking probably worked the exhaust loose. I probably would have been fine if I were just doing a little around the town driving or highway cruising.

As Mickey Mouse as it sounds, aluminum foil can be wrapped around a lot of components to make an effective heat reflector. It is cheap and it works. My hood liner is two layers of low cost carpet padding covered in three layers of aluminum foil.
