1. Testing for tomorrow

Porsche's first fully electric vehicle, the Mission E, is rapidly going through development on its way towards seeing the bright light of production lines. Porsche's chairman, Oliver Blume, revealed that the brand is planning on building various models of the car that will be placed under the Panamera. The various tweaks to the models will range from power levels to range capability.

2. Level 4 self-driving

Included in the Mission E will be the much sought after in the industry Level 4 of autonomous driving. If Porsche can pull this off, it could be a major coup if they can beat others to the mark first. Level 4, for those not in the know, will be effectively a ghost driver who will chauffeur you about and be able to safely navigate in almost any scenario. Porsche, however, doesn't want you to worry that it will diminish the driving quality because of your self-piloting vehicle. This is after all, still a Porsche.

3. Range and power

Porsche is still sticking to the numbers it gave at the 2015 Frankfurt Motor Show where it conveyed that the concept car had a range of 311 miles with the capability to recharge to 80% in 15 minutes. The way that Porsche can claim such a feat with the battery is that the car is making use of the 800V system that has double capacity compared to the 400V system that is used more widely at the moment. The concept car also was said to be able to do a run to 62 in a quick 3.5 seconds and onto 124 mph in 12 seconds.

4. Upgradeable power

Taking a page from Tesla's rule book, Porsche will have over-the-air updates to the car that can not only update the OS with creature comfort features but can also unlock additional power. Blum states that while it is not a definite feature at this point in the development that it is on the table. "It isn't decided yet, but it could be possible to charge up with more power. For example, when you have 400 bhp, it could be possible to upgrade to 450 bhp."

5. Leaving fuel behind

The Mission E for Porsche could be a new shot of life into the brand broadening its appeal beyond just performance. The brand is hoping to sell at least 20,000 of the EVs a year which would represent a good 10% of Porsche sales if you take a look at what the current figures are for the company. This EV, along with rumors of a plug-in hybrid 911 would push the car well ahead of any competition in the market in terms of the most efficient performance cars out there.
