Back at it again

Southern California's own Gunther Werks has taken the 993 of the late 1990s and upgraded it in pretty much every imaginable facet. The last of the air-cooled 911s has something very special just under the paint which is a full carbon fiber exoskeleton. We're sure you're familiar with past products from Gunther Werks like the limited and very powerful 400R which was another 993 based creation.

Lightweight for performance

CEO of Gunther Werks, Peter Nam, tell us why the company decided to show up with an exoskeleton for viewing. "After debuting our project last year at The Quail, A Motorsports Gathering, we received a lot of questions regarding the carbon fiber elements of the vehicle,' he remarked. 'This year, we decided to bring an exposed carbon exoskeleton straight from our production line to showcase the amount of carbon fiber that adorns each Gunther Werks transformed 911. We also brought a completed customer vehicle so attendees who weren’t able to stop by our exhibit last year can see the finished product."

One cool customer

Replacement of the steel and aluminum body with custom designed and fabricated carbon fiber allows for the car to be lighter as well as for subtly changing the dimensions in order to fit in the larger wheels and tires. Also at the show was the new Sport Touring spec of the 400R which is a toned down version which a "ducktail" spoiler. Other upgrades on the Sport Touring 400R is a new custom intake plenum and a host of other modifications. The exterior wears a classy low gloss shade of paint called Chelsea Grey and features a side stripe along the lower portion of the car. To go along with the contrasting use of grey and red are shiny black wheels that bring just enough pop to the vehicle's appearance.

Performs as well as it looks

Every Gunther Werks vehicle has gotten the naturally aspirated air-cooled 4.0 liter flat six engine from Rothsport that produces 400 horsepower and 330 lb-ft of torque. Adaptive dampers straight from JRZ provide scalpel shard handling. For bringing the car down to legal speeds, carbon ceramic Brembo brakes with 380-millimeter rotors on the front and rear are used. The 18-inch wheels are wrapped in Pirelli P Zero Corsa measuring 335 mm wide with the rear measuring 295 mm.

Gunther Werks plans on building 25 of these new 993 conversions. Customers can either supply their own 993 donor car or Gunther will work to find one for the project.
