1. Modern Take on an Iconic Classic

Gunther Werks has been churning out handmade carbon composite products for sports and luxury vehicles for 14 years now. And despite their reputation for producing some seriously high-quality components, Gunther's latest creation is easily their best. Because even though the masterful, reimagined 400R you see before you isn't exactly the first modernized air-cooled 993, it's certainly one of the finest.

2. Calculated Approach to a Delicate Process

Many consider the air-cooled 911 to be the finest sports car ever produced. For that reason, many would argue that you don't necessarily need to mess with perfection. But the 400R takes a calculated approach to that delicate process, seeking only to make the 993 lighter, stiffer, and a little more bespoke. Gunther Werks sheds weight by installing carbon-fiber composite body panels, deck lid, spoiler, and roof. The fenders are also 30 mm wider than stock to accommodate the larger rubber.

3. The Heart of the Beast

Of course, the 400R wouldn't be a true tuner car if it didn't feature an enhanced powerplant. But Gunther Werks resisted the temptation to slap some ridiculously high-powered engine in the back of the 400R. Instead, they leaned on Oregon-based Rothsport Racing to build its 4.0-liter, naturally aspirated heart. The balanced and blueprinted masterpiece isn't exactly a slouch, however, producing 400+ horsepower and 330 lb-ft of torque. And it makes some truly glorious noises on the way to a 7,800 rpm redline.

4. The Best of Both Worlds Lies Underneath

Nowhere is the marriage of old and new more evident than in the 400R's chassis. Gunther retains Porsche's existing additional suspension points, yet widens the front by 30 mm. Adjustable KW Clubsport coil-overs and beefy anti-roll bars join a hydraulic lift system, which allows the front to clear obstacles rather than mess up the pretty bodywork. The goal is to provide a firm yet comfortable ride, one that also presents optimum handling at all speeds.

5. A Truly One-Of-A-Kind Creation

The cost of all this modernized air-cooled goodness isn't exactly cheap, of course. You'll need to pony up $525,000 on top of the cost of a 993 donor car to convert your Porsche into a 400R. And even then, Gunther Werks is limiting production to a mere 25 cars. Of course, that means that you'll have one of the more exclusive 993 recreations in existence, especially since you'll be able to make it truly one-of-a-kind by specifying every color and finish to your own liking.
