Do You Daily Drive Your Porsche, or Is It a Weekend Warrior?

Porsches might be special and pampered by some, but there are those who prefer to use them every day. Which one are you?

Daily or Weekly?

For most, a Porsche is a second car or fair-weather cruiser. Most likely, you own a more mundane vehicle for the daily grind, rainy days, and nasty salty roads (if you live up north). But there are plenty of folks that do drive their Porsches on a daily basis. And Rennlist forum member Lucky991 is amazed that anyone can resist the temptation not to.

Drive the Wheels Off

"How can you stand not to daily drive your 991," Lucky991 asks. "I know there are all types of car owners. From those who dream about their 911 their entire lives only to get one and garage queen it. Or those who have anxiety about racking up the miles and suffering depreciation. As much as I have some anxiety on how long I can run this beautiful machine before the wheels fall off, I'm determined to try and go as long as possible."

Crushing Commute

As you might imagine, this question provoked a wide variety of responses. Starting with mprog, who just can't bring himself to drive his Porsche every day. "I have a really hard time with it, but my commute is a bit crushing if I’m not in the carpool lane. And either way, it’s a lot of stop and go. My 991 C2S is mostly for track days and occasional weekend drives. And while that saddens me a bit, every time I drive it I fall in love with it again. Mine is a bit modified to my own liking (suspension mostly) but if my daily commute was easier I’d definitely just own that."

Rain or Sleet or Snow

Then again, there are plenty of folks that just can't ignore the amazing driving experience their cars bless them with. To the point where Stevelev is willing to drive his, even in the winter. "To each their own. My Targa is far too good a drive to let it sit in storage over the winter. So I recently unloaded my S3 and picked up winter shoes for it. Now it will be my year-round CDN DD."

Have Fun

For good2go, the whole issue boils down to the almighty dollar. "I believe it comes down to money. Not everyone can afford a $150k depreciating asset. The more you drive it, the more it depreciates. Personally, I'm like you and drive it until the wheels fall off. To me, a Porsche is a car to have fun with. I like mountain biking. Take the Porsche. I like cross country skiing, take the Porsche. I like hiking, take the Porsche. I like traveling, take the Porsche. I have to go to Home Depot, take the Porsche. I like going to the race track, take the Porsche. I don’t just take the Porsche out for a weekend drive. I drive the Porsche to have fun going to have fun."

Keep It Pristine

For folks like Jim991, they just can't stand to see their cars in anything less than stellar condition. "One of the things I love about my P car is that it's in pristine condition. I enjoy keeping it that way. Garage kept, PPF, ceramic coated, washed regularly. I drive it mostly on weekends and evenings after work. I put 20k miles a year on my DD. It gets banged up in parking decks and parking lots on a regular basis. No reason to subject a high-end sports car to that kind of abuse."

Either or Both

Or you could just be like stout and own a Porsche for each purpose. "The 914 is a special occasion car, the 991 a daily driver. How perverted is that? I suppose some of that is sentimentality—but most of it is practicality. The simplest Carrera is just so good at everything, and I actually like the way it looks when it's a little dirty. An unexpected upside to Brewster Green, which I thought would be like black. The car looks lived in/used/enjoyed. Imperfectly perfect. But to each their own, as I can also see where a 991 can be a car for special occasions. As someone said, it can be either. Or both."

Matter of Space

For folks like sr5959, the issue boils down to a limited amount of space, not a personal choice. "Daily driver for me, but not by choice! We have only two parking spaces so it has to be my DD. I love driving the 911 and looking at it, but I also love all types of vehicles, not just sports cars. Quite enjoy driving our other car, a VW e-Golf. It's fun in a different way. If we had another parking spot I think I'd have an old Explorer or something for work duties."

Separation Anxiety

Like a lot of folks, usccharles has his Porsche and his "rain car." "I have a Jeep Wrangler for days when it's raining and a couple of times during the year when my kid wants to cruise the streets with the top completely open with her dad. I also have it for days like now, when my 911 is getting repaired at the shop I noticed over the past few days a slight onset of depression coming on, and I'm coming to the realization that this happens every time my 911 is away at the shop. I daily drive and am happy when I'm with my 911."
