This article applies to the Porsche 928 (1979-1995).

Changing the oil on your Porsche 928 is not only important maintenance, but it's also crucial to keeping your engine running. Some people recommend replacing the oil every 3,000 miles, whereas the average is 5,000 miles. The older your 928 gets, the more often you should replace the oil. Here's how to do it at home and save money on professional labor costs.

Materials Needed

  • 9 quarts of 5w-50 synthetic motor oil
  • Porsche certified oil filter and oil filter removal tool
  • Socket wrench and 15mm socket
  • Torque wrench
  • Oil pan
  • Car ramps or jack stands

Step 1 – Start the engine

Start the engine on your 928 and run until the engine is warm but not hot; 3-5 minutes is the average.

Step 2 – Place car on ramps

Position the ramps in front of the front wheels and drive the car up the ramps. If the ramps are unavailable, use the jack stands.

Step 3 – Turn engine off

Once your 928 is positioned correctly, turn the engine off.

Step 4 – Remove oil filler cap

Open the hood and remove the engine oil filler cap.

Step 5 – Drain oil

Position the oil drain pan underneath the oil drain plug. Remove the drain plug with your 15 millimeter socket wrench.

Warning

Be careful to avoid the hot oil as it begins to drain.

Step 6 – Replace oil filter

Use the oil filter removal tool to remove the oil filter that is adjacent to the oil pan underneath the car. You can remove the oil filter while the oil drains into the drain pan, but again, be cautious not to touch the hot oil.

Step 7 – Install new oil filter and replace oil drain plug

Install the new oil filter with the oil filter tool and, once all of the oil has drained, re-install the oil drain plug with the 15 millimeter socket wrench.

Step 8 – Pour new oil in oil filler hole

Pour 8.5 quarts of the 5w-50 synthetic oil into the oil filler hole (refer to location in Figure 2) and replace the oil filler cap when completed.

Step 9 – Check oil levels

Wait a few minutes, then check the oil level in the engine using the dipstick, add if necessary.

Step 10 – Start engine and remove car from ramps

Start the engine and remove the car from the ramps or lower the jacks. Allow the car to run for a few minutes, and then inspect underneath the car for oil leaks.

Over the next two weeks, periodically check underneath the car for oil leaks.
