16s vs 17s
I have 2 sets of wheels; 968 16x7/16x8 and cup 2 17x7/17x9 from a 993.
I need to get rid of a set but I don't know which direction I should take. They both look good on the car for different reasons, I like the "retro" appearance 16s can have and the filled out look of the 17s- not to mention the vastly larger tire selection. I can also run 245/45-50 all around on the 16s but with the 17s 225/245 or 255+ is the max I can do, and I don't want to introduce understeer on my already understeer prone 944.
What would be best from a performance standpoint? Would the squishier sidewalls of a 16" wheel's tire take away too much? I am planning on upgrading suspension very soon so I might be able to pull an F1 card and try to make up for it with a stiffer than usual spring setup. How would their contact patches in cornering compare? Would having such a fat tire on the 16s detract from the grip I'm after?

17"
I would go with the 17" wheels.
Tires are more and more limited for 16" wheels.
You could go 245/45/17 all the way around if necessary although tight on a 7 inch front wheel.
Better would be 235 f and 255 r on the 17.
You could also look for a 7.5" (or 8") front Cup 2 wheel
