Post Track wheels and tires for 996

I am looking for the best combination of tires and wheels for my 2001 996 c2 (no traction control) would prefer 17", there seems to be more tire choices. Anyones opinion would be welcome

Tom,

I have a 1999 996 Cab that is running on 17" factory wheels with 245 front and 275 rear Hoosiers R compound. The key was to use a stock 996 rear ( 9") wheel on back and a stock Boxter rear (8.5") on the front to be able to get the bigger rubber up front which pretty much solves understeer.

The car is entered in multiple DE's and performes very well but with the Hoosiers could use some more suspension.

Thanks, sounds like what I had in mind. I saw BBS wheels that were fairly light AND CHEAP that I can beat up as I learn. Dont know if they have 17 x 9, Maybe 17 x 10? The car has sport suspension and that might help

Cool

Hi Tommy -

Glad to see you're back in action -- good luck with the new ride (post a pic, huh?). FWIW, I've always loved the looks of the Fikse FM10's on the 996....

Tom,
By now I'm sure you have made your decision but I thought I would chime in anyway. I'm using 18x8.5/18.10.5 Kinesis K28s on my 99 996c2 with 245/35 - 285/30 Hoosiers. If you like Hoosiers then 18s are not a problem. If I recall correctly, the rears are about 16 lbs lighter per wheel. Fronts about 12 Lbs. Understeer is all but gone however you will be out shopping for a new suspension. Good luck.

I have a 2000 C2 and II have found hat 18" are worth a second over 17" on a track like Road Atlanta and 1.5" on a track like Roebling Road (much more twisty with long sweeping turns). With regards to tires, Kumho will release a new 18" race tire in a month and Tire rack currently runs specials on BF Goodrich R1A T/As. You can get a full set of race tires for under $600 which is cheapeer than anything I have ever seen in 17s.
OK, so now I'll be a little self serving.. I have a set of original Porsche wheels for sale. They are orginal 18" turbo looks. I actually have 2 sets. One is off of a 993 which gives you an 8" front and 10" reear and the other one of my 996 has 7.5" front and 10" rears. Both are fantastic track wheels. I emphasize track wheels because they are not cosmetically perfect: scratches coming from mounting and dismouting. I will sell the 996 set with a brand new set of BFG R1s for $1250 + shipping. The wheels cost over $1800 new, the tires cost about $600and mounting and balancing is at least a $150 affair at any good race shop so you get everything at half off. The reason why I am selling is that I have a 993Supercup race car on the way and that car use centerlocks intead of 5 bolts. Fell free to call me if you're interested at 404-609-9573
