Post 17 inch v. 18inch

For those of you who track your cars (996's in particular), which size would you reccomend; is there an inherant detriment to using the 17 inch wheel?

Not really, and you'll find 17" DOT-R tires are substantially cheaper and easier to find. The 18" will give you a bit more turn-in response, due to the lower sidewalls, but they are also less forgiving for the same reason.
