Fat tires on an RS Clone?
I just finished a 911RS Clone from a '70t. Racing 2.9L motor, Close Ratio 915 Transmission/ Racing Suspension/"S" brakes. I am running 7x16 and 8x16 Fuchs wheels. I plan to keep this set-up for the street and am looking for a more aggressive width for track use. I heard about a 911RS Clone featured in Excellence magazine a few years ago that had specially made 8"x17" and 10"x17" Fiske wheels fitted to it. Can this be? Does any one know anything about this car? I don't want to go wide body, but would love this kind of grip potential (and the outrageous look of those tires sitting under my fenders!) Any help chasing down this potential would really be appreciated.
Thanks, Jim Florance

Stock SC front was 6". Keep in mind that each additional .5" of width will require geometrically more work to fit. The same can be said for tires. 7" are easy, 7.5" and 8" work w/ progressively more trouble. You can fit up to 8x17 fronts w/ up to 245/40 tires if you plan on removing the lips entirely and have just the right o/s.
In the back stock SC is 7", 9" fits easily, after that you will run into problens both inboard and out. In the back I use 9.5" but others have 10", you need just the right o/s and plan on fiddeling w/ lips, trailing arm bolts and oil lines.
I would start by searching for the tires you want to use, keeping in mind their height(shorter is generally better), width, weight, grip and availability of matching mates. Then get the wheels to suit the wider end of the tires design spec.
Since you are looking for track rubber Michelin Pilot Sport Cups 225/45 and 255/40 in 17" are a very good track tire in a size that can be fitted relatively easily(compared to 235/45 & 275/40(25.7") that is often used) The MPSC is a wide, short(25") sticky tire. Which won't require all of the available wheel well room or overly wide wheels(8s and 9 or 9.5s will do nicely)
Another possibility for track only rubber is to go all the way to 18s. The availibility of 35 series rubber means that you can get say 265/35(25.1") size tire w/o sacrificing gearing due to overly tall sidewalls. the 265/35 will want a 225/40 front to mate w/.

Hi Jim,
I got a set of 17x8 and 10 custom 3 piece Fuch rims in San Diego at a place called Mirage International.
The owner Jae Lee (858-581-1101) helped me select the correct offset rims for my RS bodied 911.
Jae has 3 piece Fuchs and other style 17 inch rims. A set of 4 go for around mid to low 2k.
My 17x8 fronts have an offset to accommodate a future big red brake upgrade too.
If you call Jae tell him long Mike referred you.
On my car I have run Hossier 245/40/17 and 275/40/17. I tried some Ecsta 235/40/17 and 275/40/17 tires too. Not impressed.
I recently fit some some Victoracer 255/40/17 fronts and 275/40/17 rears. These tires seem closer in size to the gumball Hoosiers.
Here's a link to some pics of my 911 with 17s.
