Default 16 vs 17 street/track wheels

I want to make a set of street/track wheels using R888s tires and I have 2 opportunities to start from:

- Design 92 original wheels (6x16 front and 8x16 rear)
- Mille Miglia Cup1 (7,5x17 front and 9x17 rear)

Design 92s are much lighter (about 3 kg each) but they can receive thinner tires with taller side-walls. (205/55 front and 225/50 rear).
Cup1s can provide more rubber (225/45 front and 255/40 rear) and more precision.
The tires difference will also add a considerable difference in unsprung mass...

Given the R888s have pretty stiff side-walls, would you go through the weight way, or would you give more importance to the quantity of rubber and flex?

Ciao

I would go for the 17's.
They may be heavier, but they are also wider and give you many more options for tire sizes.
With the 16's you can run 205-225 F and 225-245 R.

On the 17's you can run from a 215 to 245 F and 245 to 275 R.
Plus there are many more options for tires in 17 inch sizes. The number of 245/45/16 tires is dwindling.

Greg,

I'm not quite sure that having more rubber gives more benefits than weighing 3/4 ks less each wheel.... plus, I prefer running not-too-wide rear tires because I like the car not to be understeering.
R888s are available in 16".

mmmh.... veeery confused...

I'm becoming more and more a believer in the advantages of lighter/shorter tires. Mostly from bicycling where you directly feel even very small changes in weight and tire width.
on 7 & 8 x16 you can use Toyo RA1 225/50 & 245/45 tires w/ the same wheels & R888 you could use 225/45 or 205/55 or 225/50 fronts and 245/45 rears

in the past few days I've made a simple test: III gear from 2000 to 5000 rpm.

- Mille Miglia Cup1 7,5x17 and 9x17 with Bridgestone S02a 205/50 fronts and 255/40 rears: took 7,9 seconds
- Design 92 6x16 and 8x16 equipped with Pirelli P-Zero 205/55 fronts and 225/50 rears: took 7,5 seconds

0,4 sec. is 5%... significant difference! BUT the feeling at the wheel was much better on the 17s... probably due to tire difference?

@ Bill,

I know well the difference on bicycles wheels...! 3 years ago I bought a set of Campy Bora: the first time I used them, I had the feeling of someone pushing me from behind UGE difference!

When comparing auto 17 to 16 part of the difference is tire height , part weight & weight distribution and part tread compound.

w/ bicycles most 700s are the same rolling radius but changing from 19mm to 18mm and Mavic Open Pro to Ksyrium SL, using the same tire type made a night & day difference in pedaling effort over the same 30mi loop that I do daily
