Default How do I get this crud off (easily)?

I did an initial cleaning with Simple Green MAX. I then tried some 3M Citrus Based Cleaner on a small area, which worked somewhat but only after letting it soak in for a few minutes, then applying alot of elbow grease with a semi stiff brush.

Any recommendations for quicker methods appreciated.

I had the same stuff on my old D90s. I think it is some sort of waxy undercoating. If I recall correctly Varsol seemed to clean it up. I'm not sure if it damages the original finish, but they were storage wheels so I wasn't worried.

That's the cosmolene coating from the factory. If it's an alloy wheel you can use lacquer thinner to get it off. It's an undercoating material.

Makes sense that it could be some sort of undercoating that got onto the wheels at the factory...it has that look. But after 20 or so years, it has dried to a rock hard consistency and adhered like it was one with the wheel.
I've tried the following so far:

- A Varsol-like mineral spirits paint thinner (the crud wouldn't budge)
- A citrus-based product called 'Goo-Gone' (quickly removed some other mess, but not the dried stuff)
- The 3M Citrus Based Cleaner (best so far, but still poor results).

Anyone tried something called 'Orange Blast' Wheel Cleaner? (as you can see I'm getting desperate).

- Orange Blast went back to the store wthout even a squirt...trigger pump failure.

Any luck with P21s gel or is this more for brake dust and dirt?

BTW, they are D90's I'm planning to use for winter tires...good eye.

it'll take time and a 55 gal drum of elbow grease, but clay bar may be able to get this stuff off.

Wurth Citrus degreaser is better than the 3M stuff. Hard to find in the USA. Look on the web site www.wurthusa.com.

The key is, once the wheels are clean, to gut on a few good coats of wax like the RejeX wax, for future ease of cleaning.

I don't know if you've got a distributor nearby, but at work we use a product called HS1000 by Diana industries in California.

I was able to get some baked on mineral oil and dust off of some equipment at work. Nothing else worked. Not gasoline, thinner, stoddard safety solvent, Trichlor, diesel, oven cleaner, but a warm bucket of water, scotchbrite and the HS1000 worked like a charm.

we now buy it in 55 gal drums and use it in out steam cleaner. if it matters to you (it doesnt to me), it is also environmentally safe and only a minor irritant to health if you ingest it. non toxic.

No relation just a user...i love this stuff...

here's a link: http://www.dianaindustries.com/HS1000.html

+1 for xenit by stoner. You could also try a healthy mix of Optimum Power clean but I think you'll need something stronger.
