Default What is the shelf life of tires?

Specifically, street tires, Michelin Pilot Sport 2s? How long will they last, from manufacturing date? And as they begin to age, what kind of degradation should be expected?

Can PS2s sit around a warehouse or garage for 2 years and still function as new? 3 years? 4?

I've heard 5 years, but I can't remember if that was for motorcycle or car tires. I would think that as time goes by, the rubber compound would begin to dry out and harden. Of course the degradation would be worse if they were exposed to sunlight/weather.

Preservatives today keep tires fresh for 5+ years without a serious degredation in performance. Just keep in a cool dry place and away from ultraviolet light and ozone (electric motors). You should not notice much in performance loss in the Michelins in that time.

I'd guess 3 -5 years depending on storage conditions. Usually the rubber compound hardens and gets "brittle." The tires will chunk and crack. The last stages are dry rot of the cords and belts, although new materials like Aramid, and Kevlar have made this less of an issue.
