Default tire and wheel sizes

Hey, all,

I wanted to get wider tires for my 86 944T, but I imagine I'll need bigger rims as well, right?
I currently have 205/55/16 in the front and 225/50/16 in the rear, and I wanted to go 225/245. Will I need to change rear rims and put current rear to the front.

What rims size will fit 245 width tires?

Also what does the second/third number mean? I'd imagine that would indicate other dimensions of the tire, but mine are different on the front and rear (I got the car like that), so I thought I'd just ask.

thanks in advance

the way you read a tire size like 205/55/16 is (i) the width of the tire is 205mm; (ii) the aspect ratio - ie the height of the sidewall - is 55% x the width (ie 205mm); and (iii) the rim size is 16". To get the overall diameter of this tire you would add 16" + (2 x 55%x205mm), converting the last figure of course. The one thing you want to keep in mind when getting new tires (beside have adequate suspension and fender clearance) is that the overall circumfrence/diameters are not too different from stock and that the difference between the fronts and rears are not too great unless the stock setup was like that.

for a 245 tire, a good rim width would be 8.5" or 9"...the minimum you would want to use would probably be 8" and the maximum is 9.5".

What you have mentioned is a pretty standard upgrade on 944's The 86 turbo has 7" rims front and 8" rears. According to Tire Rack the rim range for 225/50's is 6-8 with the rim sized used for all mearsurements being 7". For the 245/45 it is 7.5-9 measured on a 8.

Only concerns would be watch for rubbing on the fenders. I'm not sure if the 86T came with rolled fenders from the factory. I know later ones and 90+ S2's did.
