Default Best size tire for 11" wheel?

I have a 1992 Widebody Cab that have 18x11 with 295/30 tires on the rear. The left side barely rubs on the inner fender. I don't wan't to roll the fenders and also in need to replace the rear tires. I was woundering if I can put 285 30 or 35 on the rear. I was told that 285s are too small for 11" wheel. I was also tols it was fine. Has anyone tried a 285 with 11" wheel? or does any know if this will work? Thanks ahead of time!

Your 295/30 tires fit wheels from 9.5" to 11", but a 10.5" wheel would be the optimum fit, according to specs posted at tirerack.com. The problem with going to a 285 size is that, although it will "fit" on a 11" wheel, its optimum fit is on a 10" rim. That supports those who claimed that a 285 would be "too small" for your 11" wheel. You can probably stay with the 295/30 size, but go to tirerack.com and look for a tire brand that size that has a narrower section width. Your current tire brand may have a wider than average section width (somewhere around 11.9"). Remember to stick with a very similar overall diameter (somewhere around 25" for your current tire).

Check the tire manufacturer's recommended wheel widths. The measured rim width is not necessarily the optimum rim width. I have 285/30s that are on the wide side and put them on 10" wheels, and they were a damn tight fit with a lot of 4-letter words being spoken when mounting them. The recommended rim width was 10" to 11.5". My guess is there are plenty of 285s that would work great for you. Or, you could find a 295 on the narrow side, but it's probably more the tread width than the section width interference that you're running into, so you should probably lean towards a 285.

285 SO2s on 11" rims on my narrowbody 993...the tires are pretty stretched, I wouldn't go any narrower than 285.

Try a 295/30 that will offer a more rounded shoulder.

Thanks for the help. I looked on tirerack website and found a couple of 285 tires that will fit.
