Default Going wider tires than stock - Pros and cons

Looking to downsize the wheels on my 718 GTS from 20s to 19s.
I will most likely retain the stock wheel widths of 8s for fronts and 10s for rears but considering going wider on the tires.

The stock tire size Porsche recommends for is 235/35-20 and 265/35-20

Downsizing to 19s, I am conflicted between going with a set of 235/40-19 for fronts and 265/40-19 for rears or going wider 245/40-19 for fronts and 275/40-19 for rears.

FWIW the tires will be Pilot Sport 4s

What are the pros and cons of going wider to this (minor) degree? Will there be somewhat added wheel lip protection? performance issues?

Slight wider tires means more contact on the road and more wheel protection. Better grip, worse MPG. Your sidewalls will be slightly more bubbled, which you'll notice on track when the tire has more flex (especially since you're stepping down in wheel diameter too), but more flex will also give a smoother ride on city roads.

I wouldn't really call any of the alterations pros or cons. They're just changes that you will need to adapt to.

As soon as I wear through my current 235/265, I'm stepping up to 245/275. I like the meatier appearance, added grip, and rim protection.

Wider tires do a bit more for track use, but not much else for street driving unless that driving involves spirited cornering. Otherwise the 20 to 19" drop will give the best advantage in ride quality. The skinnier tires will do better in rain.

Thanks for the feedback. In my case, do you think the slight increase will give any, if even slightly, increase in wheel protection?

This is mostly for spirited street driving and not track use. The roads are not the best where I live and that is my main reason for downsizing to 19. Ride comfort and rain performace are irrelevant to me.

Going wider will give more wheel protection. 5mm is pretty significant.

There's no section width difference from a 235/35 20 to a 235/40 19. Both are 9.5". It's also 10.7" on the rear tires in either 265 size.

20 to 19" will give you a better ride, but won't protect the wheels better.
