Default Michelin Pilot sport 4S

I am currently using Cup 2's on my 991 GTS (street and track driven) and I am in need of a new set. I am wondering if the MPS4S can handle a few track days a year or if I will destroy them in one track session like i did with the stock P Zero's. I'm less concerned with lap time and more concerned with durability. I would be okay with sacrificing overall grip/lap time with the Cup 2's if i can gain some more durability with the 4S.

Can Tire Rack shave the MPS4S to reduce the new tire squirm?

depends how hard you drive
if you are intermediate or lower then 4s will be just fine and they will be more durable for sure
advanced drivers will see overheating and chunking of the tread on 4s/super sports

^ That's what i'm afraid of. I'm an advanced driver and worry about the ability of the 4s to cope with heat during even one session. I think i'm going to play it safe and get another set of Cup 2's (when they are back in stock). I wish there was an extreme performance tire (i.e. Yoko AD08) available in stock sizes as i had decent luck with them on my prior M3.

advanced drivers shouldn't even THINK about using street compound tires on the track if they intend on pushing the car

I agree with this. More times than not I see overheating and chunking happening on a street tire used after becoming used to the performance of more track oriented tires. Coming off of Cup 2's and into P4S' will not give you the performance that you are after - unless you goal is to take it easier than you would have on the Cups.

I can't believe there aren't more options for track oriented street tires for 911's.

I agree, it seems like we're basically limited to Michelin Cup 2 (wears uber fast), Pirelli Trofeo R ($$$), Toyo R888R (255F/315R, but way too many instances of failures on track), and that's really about it.

Hoosier R7 if you trailer, but if you're trailering a full track car then why a 991 right?
