visiting california
Hello fellow Rennlisters,
So I'm planning a trip to California for may 2015. last time i visited was over a decade ago so I'm looking for any and all kinds of input from you guys (and girls) on what to see, things to do, where to go, etc.
Here are some guidelines to what I'm interested in:
- First off, anything to do with cars I'm definitely down for (track days, car festivals, cruising around the desert in dune buggies, checking out HRE facilities or other California-based car companies, see whether magnus walker will let me check out his 911 turbo collection , etc...)
- Military/gun related stuff (air shows, public demonstrations, gun ranges, etc)
- Skydiving - am just shy of getting my license (40 jumps), so I wouldn't mind finishing it at a sick location.
- Outdoors stuff (love being outdoors, camping, hiking, lakes, rivers, canyoning, etc)
- I'm not a big fan of touristy stuff like Piers, city centers, shopping malls, etc. I prefer to mingle with locals and see their state/city through their eyes...
I will probably fly into SF or LA and rent a car to do the traveling (anyone know any good rental places apart from Hertz, Avis, Alamo - I prefer European cars - and no it doesn't have to be a Porsche or Ferrari ). At this point I'm looking for suggestions anywhere in California. It's a huge state so I probably won't be able to do everything everywhere in California. But with your suggestions and input I will be able to start plotting stuff on a map so I can figure out a route for this trip. Time-frame is anywhere between 7-20 days depending on how overwhelming your suggestions and ideas will be
Thanks for the help.

sky diving is in Perris California
lots to eat - check Yelp - almost any cuisine is at your beckoning. if you have any specific questions - let us know.

List the dates you'll be traveling here and we'll be able to point you to some events.
Let us know if/when you'll be in the SF Bay Area and perhaps we can schedule a meet-up...

If you go to LA, check Phillippe's downtown for a French dip sandwich. Find someplace in Beverly Hills to hang out and enjoy all the four-wheeled eye candy rolling by....T

To bad that your not up here over the weekend (May 9-10) as the Sonoma Historics are going off at Sears Point.
If you are coming through Santa Cruz, you may want to drop in on Canapa Design for some car ****.
Safe travels...

Well, the drive up from LA area to SF on Hwy 1 is always great. Lots of scenic ocean views, and parks along the way for hiking.
I'm a retiree, so, unlike David and Wayne, I could do a drive with you around the area. Skyline Blvd, Empire Grade, ... Alice's for b'fast, lunch or dinner. Lots of trailheads off Skyline, hiking and mountainbiking.
In my immediate area, Purissima Redwoods is a great hike, and there's a relatively flat Coastal Trail very close by.
Good eats throughout the area.
