Street Parking in SF with a soft top
#16
Born and raised in SF.
Have had cars vandalized on the street in so called "safe" as well as "dangerous" neighborhoods. Not often but it happens. It's the City.
Doesn't matter if it's a convertible or not but a soft top makes it easier to break into the car and the thief isn't going to car how much it's going to cost you to replace the roof. Best not to park in the same spot each time for long. Could become a target if you do.
Your comprehensive insurance coverage should cover any roof damage and break-in losses but, if you really care about your car, you should try to find a secure parking place for it rather than park it on the street. I found a relatively cheap spot in the outer Ricmond district to park my MR2 (a ragtop) when I lived near Mt. Sutro, because the HOA where I lived didn't allow any street parking for extra cars in the area controlled by the HOA.
It was an uncovered spot in back of an apt house that I paid $100/mo for at the time. I'm sure parking rates have gone up since then but it was $ well spent IMO. I never drive/drove the MR2 much and the car was always safe there. Just had to buy a cover for it while stored there, which I still use on it because it's parked outside in the sideyard of my house now.

Rented in SF for 4 years with a 993 (2016-2020). Always was able to find garage parking on craigslist for $225-$300 per month (even if my apt didn't directly offer it)
Never found the need to street park it in the city. My favorite out-of-home garage is the Mission Bartlett Garage.
Dont. Do. It.
Window break-ins and soft top tears dont discriminate on neighborhood, or new/old cars.
