just installed a rack on my trailer. looking for any cool or advantageous ways of holding the spares in place while traveling. i know from experience that used tires will cause a huge mess if/when it is raining while towing. i also know i don't want to use 4 ratchets each time to keep them in place individually as a slight drop in pressure can free the wheel from the strap. anyone found a good solution to both? i saw a post or two about using one strap through them all to help them together but then i have to find something to put between them to prevent rim damage/rubbing. ideally would like something to go around them/encase them to prevent the potential extra cleanups.

Does your tire rack not have a bar going through the center of the wheels?

yes it does however that does not solve any of the issues i am concerned with. they need to be secured in place so as not to move or rub into each other laterally, and if i'm lucky a way to stop the rain dirt.

Single strap through the four tires has been my go to solution since jumping into this rabbit hole. In the beginning when I cared about the track wheels used interlocking floor mats between the wheels. At one point the tire rack broke while in transit. The strap keep the wheels off the car, no damage.

thanks. looked all over the web today and found some things. decided to use a small metal tube inside a pvc for the cross bar for a little rim protection. looked at ratchet straps, cargo nets, ratchet nets and more but decided a single strap horizontally will suffice. still looking for something between the wheels, maybe some closed cell foam.
