Default Weight Distribution Hitch Help

Hey guys
I am about to do a first time tow. I have a 2017 f150 supercrew with a 8.5 x 24 feet trailer from haulmark.

Hitch Weight (% of Curb Weight): 10% - 15%
Curb Weight (Approximate): 3,280 lbs.
GVWR: (Total Capacity Trailer + Cargo) 7,000 lbs. Payload Capacity (Approximate): 3,720 lbs

My truck has a four inch lift with 35 tires. I picked up the trailer without any weight distribution trip and it was hella scary on the highway passing trucks oh my lord.

I am looking to buy one from Equalizer but don't know which one to pick. There is so many like 4k 6k 10k etc. I am new to this so any help is useful!!! I was told to put the car over the axle. Not planning to change to a heavier truck or a lighter trailer at the moment. Thanks guys.

If your vehicle can support a WDH the addition is worth its weight in gold.

Your truck can use one. I had a Curtis on my old truck, but manufacture aside this is a case where "more isn't always best"

You don't want to get the biggest strongest hitch on the planet. Too strong and the bars won't flex as they are supposed to. So if you got one rated for 14K it would be too stiff for what you say is your max weight.

Trust the vendor advice too.

How much tongue weight did you have?

I tow with f150 xl 8' bed and an ATC24 and have no issues

I like my weight at the hitch to be around 900lbs when loaded
My hitch has a scale in it to give me a quick read if I am loading more/different things than normal but it helped me balance things the first few toes

My truck is also not lifted and I think that helps too

I have an Equalizer hitch and it is awesome. If you contact them they will help you get the one you need.

As was said previously, you need the right one, not the biggest most expensive one. Tongue weight is something they are going to ask you so either buy a tongue weight scale or find someone nearby you who has one to borrow.

I'm guessing GTA is Ontario ?

I also have an F150 with a lift kit and TOYO 35 inch tires ... i tow a 20 ft enclosed with a weight distribution hitch.
Ended up putting an Air Ride suspension in the rear as my headlights were pointing to the sky in the beginning and i
scared myself a few times on the 401 on the way to Mosport.
I'll try to take a picture of my hitch tomorrow , can't remember the brand off hand , but it works for me.I set
up my trailer with a Sherline tongue scale and the way i load it meets the criteria for the tongue weight.

TDot Performance in Ontario has a good variety of hitches , check out their website !

Cheers
Phil

I know that scary feeling. The first time I towed an enclosed with a 1/2 ton and no WD was perhaps the most tension packed 500 miles of my life. Went to a local vendor and got set up with a WD hitch and sway bar the next day. Made a significant difference.

WD hitch will make a huge difference if you have a SUV or truck with short wheel base, but the WD need correct setup. I installed weight safe's distribution hitch with sway control, it is expensive but I want the tongue weight reading and they have a built-in scale.

My towing vehicle is LEXUS LX570, and my 24' trailer fully loaded is about 7500 to 8000 lbs. It was such a scary experience on the highway without WD hitch: You can feel the trailer start to sway when someone passing you, in the end I dont want to drive over 55MPH at all. The first trip with WD, I did not have a proper setup but I have already felt the difference, I can comfortably driving around 60MPH but can still feel the trailer start to move a bit when someone passing me but no sway at all. The 2nd time I made everything correct and the result was amazing, I can drive 65-75MPH without a feeling of any instability. I end up keep driving about 65MPH due to the MPG issue. It is about 11MPG at 65MPH but down to about 8MPG at 75MPH. For me it simply does not worth it...

Last week a couple i know lost control of their 1/2 ton while towing a heavy load of firewood to their mountain cabin.

He said the trailer pushed them off the road and they rolled six times. — lots of compound fractures.

Equalizer is awesome it's the ONLY one to use. I run a 12K on my F-250 with my 24' enclosed, and I ran the same 12K on my F-150 I had before w/ the same trailer. Fully loaded for a track weekend I am about 9000lbs. I really only need the 10K hitch but at the time I bought they were backordered and per my conversation with Equalizer customer service they said going with the bigger 12K was no problem, can go bigger just don't go smaller.

Blue Ox Sway Pro, buy the one that’s rated for 1k tongue weight, install it, and thank me later

I’ll second the emotion on the Equalizer. Call them. They’ll have the proper drop for the lift as well. Super important to get the tongue weight dialed in.

Best

I bought a ProPride W/D Pivot Point Projection hitch for my '16 Ram 2500 + 30' Airstream trailer prior to our extended travel across the US and Canada 2016-2018. Put 50K miles on the truck with that rig. It was stable at all speeds up and down 6% interstate grades as well as in high winds out west / passing semi-trailers. Rock solid, dependable product.

I also use a Blue Ox Sway Pro. It works well for me, but if I ever upgrade it will be a ProPride 3P hitch.

The biggest limitation with half ton trucks is payload (cargo and passengers). Tongue weight counts against this number. Most of the issues you hear about are when people exceed their payload rating and/or axle rating, even though they are within the maximum tow rating of their truck and trailer combination.
