Default Thoughts on an Audi Q8 as a tow vehicle

Hey Guys, I tow a Spec Miata or my RS for track wknds. I have a 22 ft. open aluminum trailer so combined weight is 3400 lbs. with the SM and 4550 with RS. I usually do 4-5 wknds a year and have been using my GMC Sierra for the past 4 years. I was thinking of getting a Q8 as my DD and for occasional track duties. It is rated at 7700 lbs. but my major concern is that is it has such a short WB and my trailer is longer than it.

Thoughts? Concerns?

That will be a piece of cake. An open trailer has a lot less likelihood of "wagging the dog" given that it doesn't have the same aerodynamic properties and has a much lower center of gravity. You are overthinking it, that will be a great tow rig.

You are overthinking it. Go 4 it! I have towed 6000lbs comfortably for over 25k miles with my Q7.

Like the others...I say do it! I have a large wakeboard boat (25') and my Q7 tows it with ease.

Get one with air suspension and the factory tow package.

You're probably going to need an enclosed...the towing capacity is 7700lbs. Possibly more race cars. Maybe a boat.

Got it. I'm looking for one with an Air suspension. They don't make the diesels anymore but doesn't really matter since it will be used a Tow rig so infrequently and Texas!

Not anytime soon. I have no interest in boats and have good friends who own them so...

I think the 8 is smaller than the 7.............when it comes to towing, my policy is 'bigger is better.'

They are same platform, very similar in size. The Q8 weighs a bit less. Wheelbase on the Q8 and Q7 is 118", X5 is 117. I've towed a low profile enclosed trailex with a 3200lb car (about 5000lb total) over 10K miles at 70-80mph with no issues in the X5 (aside from an unhappy M-differential). Helps to properly balance the trailer to get a lot of tongue weight.

I know. That's how I feel too. My rule of thumb is: get something with a Long WB and race car + trailer must be less than 65% of max towing capacity. That is why I bought a sierra But then that means I drive a GMC pick up as a DD. That got old after a couple of years.

Still looking.....

Bought a Daytona gray Q8 Prestige. I absolutely love it. It makes for much better DD. Will post pics soon.

Check the Audi or Tuareg forums or the Cayenne forum here on RL. Some go with the Tekonsha wireless but it's easy to install the wired version as well.
