what size and type canopy/ez up
I need something that is sturdy and lasts more than a weekend or season, something I can put up by myself and enables me to keep my cup car (with no windows ) out of the elements...
prices seem to vary widely and wind resistance isn't very clear
ezup vista 149
ezup sprint 139
ezup ecliplse 599
what size and what type pop up canopy are you using?

I'm using the King Canopy 10x15 available online from many retailers. ($250 ish) I like it. I started with the 10x10, it didn't cover enough area for sun and weather.
I travel solo and set up / tear down by myself. Doesn't hurt when a neighbor offers a hand though. :-)

Don't cheap out on a canopy ... i've seen many twist like pretzels and fly away in the wind.
You don't want to be "THAT " guy who's canopy took off and cracked your paddock neighbor's windshield or ruined his nice paint !
And yes , do get a 10 x 15 , you won't regret the choice, i started with a cheap 10 x 10 as well and it doesn't cover much.I have no windows either and i had
a custom canopy fabricated with removeable ( with big *** velcro ) side panels and i don't regret it.
Just sayin ...

I have the EZ UP 12 by 12 and have a couple of walls I can put up but never have had to.
In regards to them tumbling around the key is to make sure you tie them down. Too often people assume that since there was no wind in the morning there won't be any wind in the afternoon.
I tie two sides to my trailer and tie down the other two sides to spare race wheels.

this one seems to have windflaps and be very sturdy:

I guess most 10x15 need two people to setup so that is probably not much of a differentiator

I hadn't considered an awning...
Would an awning provide enough cover for rain?
Would the diagonal legs that connect it at bottom to trailer make it hard to park car under ( wing issues?)

The outer legs can also be detached from the trailer and set vertically onto the ground (at least for the awnings I have seen).
Just make sure your awning is wide enough to be useful in covering your car. My first and only awning did not seem wide enough and if I was going to buy one again I'd see if a wider version is available.

Spend the extra money to get the aluminum frame. Buy their sandbags and fill them with river rock pebbles instead of sand. Always, always, always use the sandbags! Buy a spare hardware kit. Trust me, you’ll need it!

If you go EZ Up, be careful about using it in heavy rain. I had an EZ Up, left it up overnight at the track with heavy rain overnight. Water built up in the corners and eventually the weight was so much it bent the canopy frame/legs. I complained to EZ Up and their response was the canopy wasn't meant to be left up overnight in heavy rain. My response back was 'what do you think racers are doing with your canopies'?
Just a cautionary tale. YMMV.
