I noticed on your over the top thread (thank you btw) which has been very informative that you have crossed off the Porsche wall charger as an option. Any reason for this?

primarily reported lack of reliable compatibility with non-Porsche EV’s and a formal written response of lack of support from porsche for those non-Porsche EV issues…but also some flakiness

My install was one of the not so easy ones. Cost for 50 amp electric was $1600 back in 2021. I needed a sub-panel, 80' run with 6 gauge. Add the EVSE wall unit and all in, I was at $2,150. This does include another $125 that I am going to incur changing out the existing non Hubbell 14-50 to the Hubbell. Wish I knew about the Hubbell at the time and I would have spec'd it to start. The electrician was worthless in this regard.

I did the work myself, with a permit from the city, with parts and costs including:

$700 for a hard-wried Juicebox 48A (11kw)
$35 for a 60A circuit breaker, added to the existing 200A electrical panel. No GFCI breaker since it's hardwired.
$80 for a few feet of 6 AWG cable (the EVSE is really close to the breaker panel, but copper cable is super expensive per foot)
$15 for a junction box and cover. I ran the cable in-wall, but needed a place for the splice
$30 for some really fancy wire splices far more secure than wire nuts
Some $ for the permit, which was rolled into other electrical work, so I don't have a dollar amount. Call it $0.
So say $860 minus the 30% federal tax credit equals $602.

I installed the 6 gage cable in 1” conduit and an electrician friend connected the wires in the EVSE and electrical panel.
  • 50’ foot 6 gage wire (only had to use 30’) was $319 at Lowes
  • Wallbox 40 amp EVSE - ~$550 on sale
  • 1” conduit and fittings - $80
  • Was going to use a Hubbell outlet and thought I found a good deal $48, but got a Chinese copy. Old enough to know if it sounds too good, it’s not! Ending up hard wiring the Wallbox
  • 50 amp CB $25
  • $150 for electrician knowledge and help to me (dumb Mechanical Engineer). Worth every penny…

Make sure you get a couple quotes I had a couple contractors just price gouging me. I had three come in at $1,200-$1,500. This was just for running a new 20' line, new 240 plug, and one 50 amp breaker. Finally found a good contractor at $600. Install went perfect and it all looks and works great. I believe my wall charger was another $550 but it's been awhile.

Late to the game here but I am usually over on the Cayenne 9YO forum. But I am in a Taycan loaner for a bit so I thought I would check out what you folks are saying about the car. I have a Cayenne eHybrid so when I got my first eHyrid I had a new service drop put in my garage. I have a century house with detached garage and thought I would be better served getting the garage it's own service. Anyway, AmerenUE did not charge me anything for the service drop (less than 1000 from from pole). The breaker box installation, garage rewiring, NEMA plug install, assorted conduit outside for Ameren to attach to and a box mounted surge protector set me back right around $2k. The surge protector was close to $500 IIRC but it seemed like a good idea to protect a $110k vehicle from potential damage though the charging system.

Wallbox 50A (for dual charging) - about $700

Installation - Long run to my circuit breaker box at the other end of my house from where the garage was, about $1300 for material and electrician

Rebate (actual check from the state) - $800

TOTAL, out of pocket: about $1,200.


PS - per my neighbor, who is a lawyer dealing with such claims: Don’t install yourself (unless you are a state certified electrician), because if anything goes wrong, your insurance company can refuse payment for any damages.

$350 both times we had NEMA 14-50 sockets installed in our garages (simple, short wiring runs)

$500 to install a NEMA 14-30 socket inside a weather-tight enclosure on the outside wall of a different, detached garage.

$2500 all in. Including permits. Had to run 110 feet of copper wire from the basement to the garage.

I think a lot of electricians like to overcharge if it’s for an EV. I had an outlet installed several years ago in my garage for an RV we occasionally parked in our driveway before a trip. My brother in law helped and we bought the items at Home Depot. 50a breaker, maybe 3 feet of wire, and the outlet. Obviously depends on the length of wire needed. Fortunately for me the outlet was installed inside of our garage right next to where my wife parks. But, it’s a simple 14-50 outlet as far as I understand and so far it’s worked perfectly for the Taycan. I think my total costs for the material was less than $200. I can’t imagine paying an electrician over $500-$700 for an outlet unless it’s being installed outside and having to run a line underground or something way more complicated.

$2500 for 100 amp breaker, ~25 ft run in 2” conduit, and disconnect (per PWCC instructions).

Please make sure you purchased/installed a high quality Hubbell outlet, and not some generic ‘constructor’ grade piece.

Like any tradesman, if you think he is quoting too high a price on a small job, offer him cash...

Out here skilled trades people aren't going to get out of bed for less than $500 per trip + parts. It's just not worth their time. Parts for a short run are no more than $200 including the better outlet.
