Default Charging Question

I have a Taycan loaner from my dealer to live with it for a week before possibly ordering one. So far the experience has been great. I needed to charge it today, so I went to a 150KW Electrify America charger. The car would not charge above 35/36KW. I was the only car there charging at the time. Is there a specific setting I needed to select on the car or is it the charger? I was plugged into the passenger side charge port.

charging depends on a lot of thing
  • battery temp
  • ambient temp
  • charging station power
  • battery charge % (unless you’re below 50% you won’t get much above 100 kW - and if you’re above 80% 50 kW or less is normal
  • luck
  • charging bugs
  • what charge rate you’re paying for…
fast charging works best for road tripping and pulling in at 20% battery or less…

there are a lot of variables, and basicallhy without log files from both the car and the charging station (something normal customers don’t have access to) there is honestly no way to tell why you got the charge rate you got…but there are a lot of variables and all of them have to align to get a fast charge rate…

this is discussed at length in other threads - recommend you spend some time on the forums and research this - it’s also not unique to Taycan - all EV’s suffer the same set of variables.

fast charging isn’t normally used for weekly use - since most people charge at home in their garage - fast charging is used while road tripping - you don’t use an EV like a gas car - you charge it every night drive it around during the day and charge it again over night - most owners rarely use fast charging - only when away from home…

it is possible that the charger was malfunctioning, next time try a different unit

I had this happen many times. On a Level 2, I once got 14 hours for full charge. Removed the plug...waited few minutes, then reinserted, 8 hours.

I had this happen in level 3 also. Electrify America. Plugged in, message: six hours for full change. 30 minutes later text message, battery at 90%

I had one ea charger wouldn’t go over 50kw. All other parameters were typical foe when I’ve done fast charging. Usually get 100-150 on a 150.

Similar situación I had with my taycan. The situation is that the plug that maybe you use is 220v/30A. Tuning this the charger display will indisicate 24A. The charger kit should be comming with 3 plugs:

1) 110V -8A
2) 220V - 30A
3) 220V - 50A

you can confirm unplugging the cable and see the label. If you label the indicate 220V-30A a never achieve al least 40A en the display and that is the why the car maybe estimate 14.5 hr charge. If you use 50A this is reduce at 10hrs to charge. I hope can help you. In my case I will need to buy the cable 200V-50A since the original owner don’t know where is the cable.
