Question onboard charging option?

Please advise according two the tech-spec the Taycan has a maximum charging (DC) capacity of 270kw (800v) as standard

But there is an option to increase its DC charging capacity to 150kw (on 400v systems)

Can anyone please explain - If the standard max charging DC is 270kw - Why you would need to choose the 150kW option? I guess its something to do with voltage? see below quote for the option.

'Optional On-Board DC Charger to increase maximum charging capacity when charging at public 400V direct current charging pedestals. By increasing the charging capacity up to 150kW, the charging time is decreased'

some DC fast chargers are 400 volts - NOT 800 volts - _IF_ you encounter one of these chargers the maximum charge rate will be 50 kW - unless you check this option

the question is: how often will you be using a 150 kW 400 volt Fast DC chargers - that answer unfortunately is - no one knows - Ireland for example they are rolling out a whole bunch of 400V 150 kW DC chargers - in the US the existing and future set of DC fast chargers is less clear…

my opinion is it’s one of the cheapest options on the list - just check the box and move on so you know you’re good…
other’s people’s opinions are - you are unlikley to use this option during the life of the car so why spend the money

I believe both are correct.

personally it would kill me to be traveling some where and pull into a 150 kW 400V charger and be stuck charging at 50 kW - the $460 “savings” would look pretty silly to me in that moment - but then again I’m weak and pathetic.

Thanks Dave - It was not the cost of course - it was the logic.....

I was unclear how a lesser capacity could augment a higher one, and was therefore unsure if it was an either 270@800V or a 150@400V - and so losing the 270 by installing the 150.

But now it's clear - The system must autodetect voltage and apply the appropriate capacity limit accordingly - so both 270@800 and 150@400 remain available

especially given the longer term trend seems to be towards 800V

thanks

We were given the advice by our sales ambassador that 150KW/400V charger is almost a must have and the car will be very undesirable on the second hand market without it.
