On my 2011 Spyder, the DRL functionality depends on where I have the rotating main light switch. I have the DRL setting checked on in the computer interface. Then, if the main light switch is off ("dot" position) or the Home position, yes indeed the main lamps will be lit with the DRLs. However, if I have the main light switch on the "sidelights" setting, the DRLs and the sidelights will be on, BUT the main lamps will remain off.
My 2012 (with PCM) does this as well, just as SCMIKE described. I have the "Lights" option in the menu accessible under INFO while using the lower steering column stalk. I can use the side lights setting on the lights ****, and have just the side lights lit and the LED spars on the front, which is what I like to do most of the time since I almost never drive at night time.
