987.2 boxster Spyder safe buy?
Thinking about adding a 2011 boxster Spyder.
any issues with possible bore scoring on these? Thanks in advance.

Porsche changed the engine configuration in 2009 which utilized a different coating inside the cylinders resulting in normal wear. Technically all engines will wear with time so it’s impossible to eliminate bore scoring.
There has been some talk about premature bore scoring in the DI engines which is caused by leaky injectors resulting in oil dilution at the cylinder during startup and subsequent scoring. But it appears to be extremely rare and can be easily monitored and avoided with normal oil changes and having the oil analyzed for fuel content. This would apply to any Porsche DI engine including the 911, again very rare.

I have regularly monitored this forum for many years and have not seen much if any concern posted here about bore scoring. My 2011 Spyder is still pretty low mileage at 9400 but absolutely no issues with the engine. It's been a very reliable car.

Yes, they can still bore score: https://lnengineering.com/products/w...&mode=list&p=2
I tend to not buy cars that have known issues that can't easily be corrected, such as a car with a non serviceable IMS bearing or ones that are well known for bore scoring. On a 987.2, I'd have zero issue buying one. The risk is so low.
Go for it!

If you search these forums you will find evidence of bore scoring in some 9A1 3.4 engines as they get older. They are not immune, but scoring is far more rare than in M97 3.4 engines. It all depends on your tolerance for risk and ability to pay the bill should something go wrong.

I have 55k trouble free miles on mine. It has become my go to set of porsche keys I grab. Mine does have a GT3 throttle body, IDP plenum and sport headers! Goodies I recommend to every 987.2 owner.

I’ll add that I have 23k trouble free miles on mine. Zero evidence of issues and she still runs as good as the day I took delivery of her 13 years ago.

Although no engine is immune, there's significantly less concern than with 2008 and earlier models. 2009+ Porsches are very reliable and few issues, that's why they sell at significant premiums over just a year earlier.
