I tracked and auto crossed aircooled 911s from 2005 to 2008 and stopped motorsports in 2011. I now live in Mexico, in a small town with flash floods, cobble stone roads, potholes, and too many speed bumps so the only p-car that makes sense is the Macan I own.
I want to buy a car for b roads and track events out of town. The part of me that misses the visceral feel of the old 911s wants a 987 Spyder MT. The competitive part of me wants a 991.2 C2/T/C4 PDK. Either car would be modded but nothing that can't be reversed. A sorted Spyder would feel amazing and can hang with older GT3s. A sorted 991.2 can keep up with a new Turbo S. The Spyder is half the price to buy and mod and is iconic but still... open car and not a 911. The 991.2 is a 911 and a total sleeper. I'm really torn here so please help me out. They are very different cars appealing to equally important aspirations of mine.
Bonus: If I go with the 991.2 and mod to stage 2 or 3, C2 or C4?

Spyder... more fun than the heavy, techno-filled, long wheelbase grand tourer that is a 991.2
If you want to go fast in a straight line, that can be done in a Macan. No sports car needed.

For back roads definitely the spyder:
open top
faster is not always better
smaller (by a huge amount)
more nimble
for track use, a GT4
mid engine trumps rear engine
good luck deciding. Go test drive both and see what you like most.

used to drive 987 spyder & 991t b2b with a friend quite often. can tell you that t always felt very isolated/pedestrian immediately coming out of the spyder
eventually that t got sold by him & spyder will be a keeper
