Awesome pictures! So what’s the verdict after some canyon carving? How’s it compare and what is your take away?
It was great. Much more fun and livelier than my R8. ACH to Newcombs is nothing but sweepers, so I’ll have to take it through Azusa/GMR or Mulholland/Santa Monica mountains to see how it handles the tighter roads.

It’s even better on the tighter roads, it is more granular and you can very comfortably push it in the lower speed hairpins.
Nice Gen-1 snag! Love the way you have individualized with the graphics and interior pieces. Nice job. The Spyder Vs. R8? Driven them both and agree 100%. My 08 TT was a similar feel to the R8. AWD, heavy, more of a cruiser. Traded it for a Spyder.
Decided to get a few runs on a DYNO-mite Dyno for my 987 Spyder last week to get baseline numbers. DYNO-mite Dyno is a hub dyno which apparently provides a more accurate reading, as opposed to a drum/roller dyno like a Mustang. Really interesting numbers.
CA 91 AKI/R+M pump gas. Stock ECU. Stock exhaust (PSE). No engine mods or tune. Ambient Temps were 55* F with ~40% humidity. 4th gear pulls.
The best run we managed was with Sport mode off, exhaust valves closed, during Run #2. This was when the car was warmed up. Power: 306.6 HP @ 6850RPM Torque: 259.8 ft-lb @ 5100 RPM
Estimated crank numbers with 12% correction from Run #2.
Sport mode on, exhaust valves open. Actually lost 16 hp and 13.9 ft-lb compared to the best run! Even the tech was surprised by the lower numbers caused by opening up the exhaust valves. His theory is that since the engine is N/A, closing the exhaust valves provides just enough back pressure to allow the engine make maximum power and torque. We did this run with and without Sport mode on a few times, and the numbers were basically the same. It's known that on these cars, Sport mode just improves throttle response and doesn't actually provide power. It's just disappointing to see that opening up the exhaust valves actually causes the car to lose power!
Overall, the car was averaging 303 HP / 257 ft-lbs at the hubs, with Sport mode off, exhaust valves closed. Not bad I guess for a 2011 with 32K miles on the odometer.
What do you guys think? Has anyone else gotten their 987 Spyder dyno'd to see what kind of numbers the car is making?
Those look like solid results. It is very interesting that the Sport Mode detunes the top end in favor of the bottom end torque, I believe this is the first time anyone has tested both ways.
Regarding the exhaust valves open and close, are you referring to PSE? I noted your tips are black which is what Porsche used for the stock exhaust, does your car have PSE also? It’s easy enough to change the tips but I also wasn’t sure if you have an aftermarket exhaust.

So what’s next now that you have these numbers?
Sport mode does nothing to power. It’s enabling PSE that reduces power.
Curious, after you did the PSE on, did you go back and re-do the PSE off runs? Do you have a run number, time of run and oil/water temps for each?
I've seen similar reductions from the DME simply pulling timing due to heat. Didn't see the reduction in power you saw from PSE on/off but I standardized for consistent oil/water/timing measurements.
Beautiful car! I have a 2010 Boxster S and have considered moving to a 997.2 cabriolet. How do you feel your new Spyder compares to your old 997.2 cabriolet?

Much more nimble (because it's several hundered pounds lighter), much more neutral (because it's mid-engined) and much more fun (because of the manual transmission). Wouldn't go back.
Thank you Sawborg! I few months ago, I test drove a 997.2 C4S and was disappointed. I couldn't decide if it was because it was a coupe (I am a cabriolet guy) or the weight. Based on your feedback, it was probably the extra weight. I love the nimble feeling of the 987. These cars are like hens teeth in my area and I always have to drive at least 2 hours (one way) to test another car. Sounds like I wouldn't like a 997.2 cab as much as my current car.
