Default Which wheels and where to buy?

Looks like there are several options for wheels...is there a general consensus on which ones are best?

Any also, is there a good place to buy in bulk? I need 3 sets!

I don't think there is any real difference between any of the OEM wheels that fit. I like Boxster S wheels, but only because I think they look better. Most seem to pick based on looks and availability.

As for where to buy? That's the hard part. eBay seems to be a good source. Hard to buy full sets (unless you find a racer unloading some) and I end up buying them one at a time when I see them cheap enough.

Good luck!

Thanks - is there any reason SPB couldn't adopt a low budget aftermarket wheel rule? Seems a little bit of a PITA to get wheels sourced.

I would say introducing aftermarket wheels might add a bit of an unsprung weight arms race as the OEM wheels weigh a ton compared to something like Jongbloed's or CCW's... but I agree it takes some work to source used sets. As Matt said, Ebay and the internet in general, use the Porsche Part #'s to speed the searches. I believe the one 8.5x17" BBS Boxster wheel that was used is 993.362.126.55 (?), other than that it's the Turbo twist varient (not sure of that #)..

I'm certain that whatever I'm using are the slowest

How about a bulk TIRE purchase. What's the best way/time to get a deal on 3 sets of Toyos?

We get our RR tires from Rob Cohen at 4 corner tires in FL. He offers a landed price that's hard to beat. If interested PM me and I'll send you his info.

I've heard that the 5 double-spoke wheels are lighter than the others--close to the 20.0 lb limit. Maybe, like, 20.5. They may also be weaker though--not sure.

I have a set, but have never weighed them. They're on the car with tires at the moment, so I can't weigh them. I've only used them one weekend on the track. No problems so far. They're very close on the front to the shock. I should probably add a spacer.

I do have the usual twist wheels sitting on the shelf. I just weighed them on my bathroom scale, and got 23.0 lbs. They've been painted, so stock they might be slightly less.

So you might save 2.5 to 3.0 lbs.

As others have said, they pretty heavy for a race wheel, and unsprung mass is important. Will 3 lbs make a difference? I don't know.

Hope this helps.

Greg

My local dealer (Toronto) has a couple sets of RRs left. Can bring some down for Road Atlanta. With the strong US dollar, the tires will be cheap. PM me if interested.

And Todd....

The Boxster S wheel that most of us have is 10.4 kg in 8.5" width.

The Boxster S II wheel (the double 5 spoke) is 9.5 kg in 8.5" width.

So, yes - 0.9kg or 2 pounds lighter.
