Default Toyo R Issues?

This is after 5 heat cycles. Splitting at the seam. They were mounted in the correct directions, per Toyo’s guidelines. It sounds like some other Boxster drivers have experienced this recently, as have E36 drivers. Anyone here experiencing this? Potential batch issue?

I was told at the start of the season that the new mounting was all “yellow dots out”. At Laguna Seca in August a Toyo rep notice this set and told me they still need to be mounted in the same directions we used for the RRs. Only ones that have split so far on me.

I've had two sets of the Rs do the same thing.

Date codes? This will be helpful to try to see if it is related to the same batch(s).

The date code on that tire is 0225. The separation was happening on the inside of my right rear tire. The last two heat cycles were at Summit Point.

I had the same issue in the second day of use of this tire. they were mounted to spec, and 1 failed badly, 2 of them started to fail already.
extremely disappointed.
I contacted Toyo regarding this, they just shrugged.

It’s not excellent. For what it’s worth, when I spoke to the Toyo rep I asked if this has led to any failures he told me it hasn’t. So I’m curious if anyone has actually experienced these tires failing when the seam separates like this?

I'd imagine/hope that if someone in the largest PCA Club Racing class had a catastrophic failure/delamination we'd hear about it here or in the paddock. On a brighter note, this past weekend at the Summit Point race a friend in SPB got a puncture on his rear left at one point and raced it all the way to the checkers for a 4th without it coming off the rim. In his defense for staying out he didn't know it was a puncture, only that the handling was way off but it didn't hurt his lap times. Lol

Toyo advises that once there is an open tread splice, the tire should immediately be removed from service and replaced. Not sure I want to press my luck and see how far these tires will go while falling apart.

All three of my sets have done this and all tires were mounted per Toyo RR standards. To be honest, I would rather be on the old tire, these are faster, but clearly heat cycle out much faster than the RR's.

If I had my way, we would race on Hankook Z214s.

Not quite sure what you are asking?

Yes, Hankook makes a 245/40-17, but not a 255 like we currently run with the Toyo's. Personally, I think the 255 is too big for our cars, especially since we have to put them on 8.5" wide tires.

Thanks for the information. I bought a Boxster spec car a couple months ago and have been using it mostly for track days and auto cross. I need to get a new set of tires and I did not want to buy the Toyo R’s because of the issues. I’ll try the z214’s in a 245.
