I had forgotten that detail. I have a vague recollection of using a dremel to create some clearance on the old style part to make it work on one car. On another, we swapped out to the new parts, including the new pedal.

So when you say your have to clearance or replace the pedal. which part are you referring to? this is from the 986 PET. do you need to update the part(s) from the 997? If it's the "plunger" that presses the master cylinder, will any 997 part work, or is a specific model required.....

Thanks!

Here is the list of parts needed to update a Pre-Sept 1999 Boxster or 996 to accept the new style master cylinders superseded by Porsche (including the 997 GT3 M/C). I don't think replacing the brake pedal itself is necessary, just literally everything from the brake pedal forward.

Parts needed:

Your choice of one of these brake boosters with the updated design:
2003 996 C2 Brake Booster (TRW or Porsche Genuine options): 996-355-923-00
or
2004 996 GT3 Brake Booster (Porsche Genuine only): 996-355-923-90

And one each of these:
997 GT3 master cylinder (TRW or Porsche Genuine options): 997-355-910-30 (**Note the part number has been superseded by Porsche to 997-355-910-31 just this year)
Firewall seal update set: 000 043 204 66
Updated brake push rod: 996 423 165 05
Threaded bushing: 996 423 307 00
Pin: 996 423 308 00

More details in this thread along with PDFs of the Porsche TSB's on the backdate needed once the old style Master Cylinders were superseded.

Awesome - thanks! One final question, in the second link above, some guys are stating that with porsche made some changes in the late build 99's, that this is a bolt on. It looks l like the cutoff is S/N 620XXX and I'm in a 63XXXX. Has anyone done this as a strictly bolt on to my stock booster? And does that imply that I could potentially just bolt on to my new MC?

Thoughts?

If your VIN is in that range or after then yes it should just bolt on.

Check the part number on your booster, that might give you a hint if it was already updated or not if your car is earlier.

The VIN is good, but the booster part number does not match the ones mentioned, and the build date sticker on the booster says March, 99 So it looks like I will have to go the upgrade path. I checked around the pushrod for the brake pedal is only $50 or so, so not too big a deal.

Interesting. I would think the VIN information from the Porsche TSB would be good, but who knows.

Yes outside of the M/C and Booster the rest of the parts are not that costly. It looks like a bit of a PITA job but doable and lots of info out there on the interweb. There's even a Youtube video on how to change it (not the update though). **Worth noting this video was from the UK with a RHD car where the ABS is on the other side of the booster. For us on LHD cars we will have to remove the ABS module to get clearance to remove the brake booster.** It does do a good job of going over setting the linkage length.

My booster is 996.355.025.03 which is NOT in my version of PET. I didn't see any 025's in PET nor can I find them on the web. Interesting...perhaps my PET skills are atrophied?

Edit - I called the dealer and they say it's been superceded by 996-355-923-00... so I'll just get the booster as the supercession is the correct part for the MC upgrade.

Mat

025.03 is the early version. That's what is in my 1997 Boxster too.

From a rules perspective, are the TRW parts acceptable or do they need the Porsche stamp? The Porsche tax on this upgrade nearly doubles the cost.

Can someone describe the benefit of the upgraded MC and booster??

Reason I ask: last weekend was my first track event in this car. Under hard braking, the brake pedal would drop a little further than I'd like for heel & toe. I have a Rennline gas pedal on its lowest setting already. Would like for the brake pedal to sink less under heavy braking.

^ When you swap both the booster and MC per the rules you get a firmer brake pedal with less travel.
