Default xmission cooler

I am thinking about adding a transmission cooler to my F-Stock 986 RC (2000 - S - 6speed).
I see TuneRS has a 'kit'; but it also seems like I can piece together a transmission cooler (Derale) and an electric oil pump with some AN10 fittings and braided hose more economically.
I've seen some people add the cooler under the car (TuneRS kit is this way) or in the trunk with a fan.
So, here are my questions:

Other than convenience, is there any advantage to the TuneRS 'kit' ?
Any preference for cooler location as under the car of in the trunk (sufficient air flow there?).

Where are people mounting the heat exchanger?

on my buddies spec cayman, we mounted it behind the driver's side bumper just behind the wheel. Fan went into the trunk, pump hung from the trunk floor.

Pretty slick setup but you definitely pay for the convenience factor.

I have a similar space just above the secondary cat, drivers side that's maybe 10"x10"x10".
I'm tempted to mount the heat exchanger/fan in that area; but am a little concerned with the amount of heat given off by the secondary cat right below it (although there is a heat shield).
I'd mount the pump in the trunk right above that area.

In your buddies setup, was there a cutout from the fan in the trunk to the heat exchanger behind the wheel? I'm having trouble visualizing the setup.

Yes, there is a triangle shaped vent. the heat exchanger bolts to the outer skin of the lower quarter panel while the fan is bolted up on the inside. The fan doesn't cover the full size of the HE, but it seems to work ok. Not sure if a 986 is laid out the same way.

How does air get in/out of the trunk? In the 986 it would be sealed other than the fan hole.

In a boxster you'd probably want to have the fan and even the cooler located in a different spot. I can only tell you what worked on the SPC.

In this case though, there was a triangle shaped hole that led from the trunk to the outside.

Yes, a small vent anywhere else in the trunk would do the trick.
