Default SPB 2019 Rule Proposal Changes

Looks like there will be some small winter projects if these go through.

From rule proposal comments in latest club race newsletter:

"SPB:
a) Allow a up to 1/4th inch spacer for the rear wheels.

b) Allow a square spring setup with any allowed spring (i.e., 450/500, 500/450, 400/400, 500/500, plus stock).

c) Allow a bolt-on cross tie bar connecting the rear suspension sub-frame sides.

Proposals to allow later model engine covers and plastic floor pan undertrays are not being presented because there is no evidence that the SPB parts are inadequate, the later covers are lighter, and the undertray parts were introduced by Porsche to improve the aero. PCA Club Racing is pursuing options to deal with the reduced availability of the allowed stock rims, and it is hoped that an alternative may be announced by the end of the year."

thoughts?

I'm curious if adding an extra 1/2" to the car's stance (2 x 1/4" spacers) will actually make a noticeable difference in handling. That seems like the sort of thing only a handful of drivers (John Gladwill, Chris Drake, Todd Lamb, Aaron Elsner) could even feel... much less benefit from.

The spring thing sounds horrible

It'll cost three days in testing and 3 sets of tires to figure out - adds like 5 grand to my season

Let's just leave as is

Spacers always been somewhat legal - rules allow them for clearance

They are somewhat faster on the right track

I guess it just gives us something else to tinker with

Agreed on the springs. Not sure what problem this is trying to solve. I thought the intent of the class was to focus on driver skill, not car setup/cost. This seems to move that in the opposite direction.

I personally think the cars are just fine how they are.

Surprised the dry sump system wasn't asked for, though my guess is few would spend the $$$ considering the cost of used 2.5's...

Only for the front.

I. Wheel spacers are allowed only for 17 x 8.5 inch front wheels for fender and fenderwell clearance.

PCA is also looking at a spec wheel for the series, based on the lack of available wheels

As a builder, I’d like to see minor tweaks to a few of the existing rules to provide clarity but without any intent to change anything.

Edit: I see Walt has made nearly every clarification I was hoping to see - looks great!

——-

SPB rules clarifications:

The following clarifications of the SPB rules are effective immediately:

1) Where "bumper" is used in 6.C. and 6.D., change to "bumper cover."

2) One or both side radiator fans may be removed.

3) Electrical wiring for parts which may be deleted may be removed.

4) Seam sealer, undercoating, weather stripping, and tubing for water drainage may be removed.

5) The windshield washer tank and the washer mechanisms may be removed.

6) The plastic fender liners may be removed, or holes cut in them.

7) Thermal insulation and shielding may be removed.

8) The clamshell piece over removed convertible top components may be attached to the body in any secure manner.

The rules clarifications all seem good.

The a/b/c proposals are not good. I agree with the sentiment that these just increase cost, and do not improve the racing.

I like the proposal to award points on all races.
