SPB, it's not just for PCA (SCCA success)
Our client, Topher Everett, ran his Spec Boxster at Road America this weekend for the SCCA Majors event. He was on pole and won the T3 class in 100% SPB trim.
Based on my extrapolation on times from June Sprints along with data from Sebring and VIR Majors, the car is very competitive in T3 but it will be a tough battle against the e46's. There are 2 (and soon to be more) SPB's entered for the SCCA Runoffs at Indy.
I'm very happy that we have another series the SPB can run with, as the PCA schedule is spread pretty thin when it comes to local events.
(Please no debates over SCCA vs PCA - yes they are run differently but it's all still great racing)
There is one caveat - the cage needs to meet SCCA rules, meaning it needs to be mild (or alloy) steel 1.5" x .095" minimum. PCA rules allow alloy steel in a smaller size so be aware of this difference.
A note regarding tires: the SCCA rules had an error and show any DOT 225 is allowed, or the Toyo RR up to 255. The rule was supposed to be any DOT 255. I have discussed this with SCCA and they are going to either allow any DOT 255 immediately or allow starting with 2018. The next Fasttrack will have the answer.

I'm happy for Topher and he sure has a great car.
Agree on the SCCA comments - I've run a few times with NASA in their Spec986 class races - low turnout but they do two local races per year per track. With the closing of TWS in Texas I anticipate more SPB NASA racing as that was a major track for us to lose and lots of Texas SPB racers are getting cabin fever.

Todd, great to hear! Congrats to Topher for the win!
How is the T3 class defined (HP, weight, models, rules,...)? Are there any quick/easy/reversible mods for an SPB to make it more competitive in the class? Which tires did Topher run?
Chris, same questions re "NASA SPB".

Congrats to Topher!
For anyone who has not met Topher he's a doctor and loves to look at all your rashes and growths or other maladies while at the track
This is intriguing since SCCA is at Summit Point a lot. So is NASA for that matter.

Pardon me for getting back on topic but.....
"any DOT 255" would mean the option of running Hoosiers or similar in lieu of RRs no? Curious if anyone has done a direct tire comparison on an SPB?

I'm waiting to see when the rule correction goes into effect before doing any testing with Hoosiers. But the 245 Hoosier R7/A7 should be a bit faster.

I ran 245/40 r7's square on my old boxster before I made it spec and although my car was much heavier at the time, the improved grip was noticeable. The 245 Hoosiers were also just as wide if not wider than the 255 Toyos.
