Installed Ben's ball bearing shifter
Relatively easy install. The results are much nicer than I anticipated. Shifts are very positive. It does require a bit more muscle to shift, but it's nothing bad. It's nice to have a low cost mod turn out so good.

I did some minor cable adjustments today and it seems as easy to shift as my stock shifter was now. Most of the notchiness (sp) is gone. It has nice short precise throws. The ball bearings really give it a feeling of precision.

A Porsche tech on the 986forum boards named Ben Nenert puts them together. The last batch he did sold for about 130.00. They use 4 sets of ball bearings on a short shifter and end cups that he has machined to fit.

What adjustments did you make to smooth notchiness? I felt like the adjustments merely positioned the shifter. I didn't check my manual, but is there a method for the cable placement (yes, lazy)?

On my car with the cables installed in the same spot as the stock shifter, it put the shifter right at the end of its travel when shifting into gears 1st, 3rd, and 5th. I made some slight adjustments to keep all gear changes well within the limits of how far the shifter will move. I don't know why that would affect the notchiness but it did.

Thanks. I placed an order with him. And thanks for the plenum lead - I did not realize Ben was on this site. I signed up to 986 site just to PM him. Doh!
