Default floor mat plugs (the clips you turn to hold them down) need help

One of my tabs is broken off which rests underneath my drivers side front floor mat. I purchased new ones so that the floor mat will stay in place like it's suppose to.

Heres the problem or questions...
- How do I get under the carpet?
- How do I remove the kick plate and side panels to release the carpet to get to that plug?
- Are the plastic kick plates held down by tabs which pop off or screws.. I can't seen ti find any of these.
- Would it be possible to slide out the battery access panel and access that plug from there without removing the kick plates?

The plug is the closest one to the door so it will be the easiest to gain access to.

Thanks for all the help!!!

Bryan, I`m curious about this too but only so I can have a look at the harness running under there as it has been known to become corroded on some of the joints

I looked at it quickly the other day and ended up removing the shiny kick plate, it does have small tabs down the side and crucially one on the end closest to the rear of the vehicle. With this in mind I would start prying it out from the end closest to the front.

It did come out quite easily, and inside there are several screws that hold the plastic part in place, hopefully this gives you something to start from and once you remove the screws it becomes more clear how to completely remove it

Gents

just 15 minutes ago I replaced just the top rotating tab that holds down the floor mat. I bought new ones from the dealer for something like 1 or 2 dollars, use a pliers to pull just the rotating tab out of the base of the new hold downs and it will pop right into the old ones that i attached under the carpet, super easy and nothing like what the dealer said would be needed

Interesting, sounds much easier than we initially thought

Doesn't help me though - I still wanna inspect my harness as a preemptive measure so I`m gonna have to figure out how to disassemble whats required

Makes me wonder about your dealer though, either they are:

Incompetent - something I despise in paid professionals but see more often than I`d like too (scarily so actually) in day to day life. I generally find that there`s usually at least one person lurking somewhere in an organization that`s on their game, the trick is finding them......

Or

Greedy - by painting the bad picture they could be making you believe it was beyond your capabilities and that this was a task only trained specialists like themselves could accomplish which obviously is not the case. They "repair" the problem and present you with a grossly exaggerated bill and make some quick/easy cash. Something else I despise.

I went under the carpet to look at the battery cables just a weekend ago. You should acquire a set of plastic trim removal tools first.

First thing is to pop the stainless piece out. That reveals a couple of torx screws underneath. The rest of the plastic pieces on the sill are just held in place with the metal pop clips, but they are pretty tight. I just leveraged them out with one of my beefier trim tools. That said, they all overlap each other, so you just can't take one out - I ended up removing the trim up by the fuse box, down to the larger pieces that hold the hood release lever (that just pops off too), and also popped off (but did not fully remove) the b pillar trim too. That allows enough of the carpet to come up to inspect the wiring underneath.

Hmmm, ok, what do the plastic trim removal tools look like?

Guys, thanks for the help. I would also have just replaced the plastic piece on top by my clip mechanism completely came detached from the carpet so only the underneath portion is still there which is screwed in to the top piece I believe.

I will take off the metal trim piece and remove this plastic panels. I have already purchased the new pieces from Porsche so it should be a quick swap out.

I have this exact same problem, actually almost all of mine are broken so I want to replace all 8 of them, I too bought the new clips but you must get under the carpet to replace them.

I will try to do as suggested as well.

Let me know how it goes x98boardwell .

Will do, tackling this one today. I have the underneath plugs so I will have to access beneath the carpet as mentioned before. I will update once complete. Lloyd's mats have arrived!

Update, first of all I'm an idiot.

I was thinking for some reason that the hole that was left in the carpet needed a piece to go beneath it and that maybe it screwed into one another to sandwich the carpet between the two.

I was wrong. The new piece with clip just pushed right in to attach to that hole in the carpet beneath that mat. I had to persuade it delicately with some force but it went in well and all is working and back to normal.

I will say that for a car which cost $120,000 in 2006 I think my 2012 Jeep Grand Cherokee Overland prior to this seemed to be of better quality... many chincy parts in my opinion.

On another note, I know it's been mentioned but you can change the little twisty part on top rather than the entire piece and it's pretty easy. I didn't have a choice as mine was missing when I bought it.

Hope this helps someone!

Cheers,
Bryan

Have you guys changed the twisty thing over to the push button? My carpetted summer mats need the twisty thing, but my winter rubber mats have the push button...

You are lucky that the pieces underneath your carpet are not broken!

Mine are broken so I have to get under there to replace the botton piece otherwise the new top piece will have nothing to attach to.
