Sorry for being so dense but I want to take off the steering wheel and have never removed the horn pad. I am worried about breaking a tab or something as I tried pulling on it and want to make sure that is how you remove the pad to get to the nut.

Grasp each end in each hand and yank equally in a brief, brisk motion toward your chest. You might find that incoporating a slight twist relative to the "Y" axis will free the springs underneath and it will come off a bit easier. It should be quick and not with a lot of force. Install in the reverse by pressing it on until you hear or feel each tab catch. Don't forget the horn wire attached to the back of the pad. It usually slips off when you remove the pad but don't pull to far backward until you check to insure it is free. When you reinstall, you will most likely actuate the horn.

Mine has 3 attach points - one at each lower corner and 1 at top center.

I pull firmly and gently at lower left and work my way 'round CW. As Ron_H says
don't forget the slip-lead attached behind. I usually get 2-3 beeps in the process.

Don't feel bad about the "dumb" question. I asked the very same about a year ago. The above responses are exactly correct. You might want to disconnect the battery first.

Pull the fuse if you need to, easier than disconnecting the battery.

or just pop out the horn relay.

Last time I tried to "Pop out a relay" it took at least ten minutes of struggling and swearing

Just pull on the endges of hte pad and it will pop off. It might beep a couple times. It only takes a few seconds.

actually the hardest part is to avoid smacking yourself in the face with the steering wheel. Best to pull it loose before you completely undo the nut.

Do those two(2) clips fit in the hole? I had to force off the prior horn pad

It doesn't look like the two clips can fit in the hole with the gold plug? But the prior horn pad was flat to the metal surface.

Also are the ends of the gold plugs the same size? The top gold plug is the older one that i had to forcefully separate from the old plastic then drill out. The newer/shinier gold plug's end looks thinner. That end goes into a contact/female connector so it needs to be snug to conduct electrical signals.

Anyone successfully replace a horn pad? Mine is a 1980 but the replacement horn pad is apparently good for all 928s

My experience, on my 1980, was to pry off the plastic part by sticking a screw driver in between the plastic and the metal.
i had to break the two plastic tabs.
Then you'll be left with the gold/metal rod stuck in.
just push that gold/metal rod out with a smaller drill bit.
you'll see the gold/metal start pushing out the plastic connector behind it. this plastic connector acts as a conduit for numerous connections.
gently pull away the plastic connector and the gold/metal rod will follow it and/or fall out easily.

its getting the new horn pad on that is my issue.
to my pictures above the two plastic tabs are too wide and fat to fit back into the hole.
My guess is the two plastic tabs can be broken off, sanded down and the horn pad will lay flat on the metal surface with the gold/metal end going right back into its respective slot in the plastic connector.

Any advice/data points much appreciated as I still dont see how the two plastic tabs can fit into the hole that the gold/metal rod goes into.
but the prior gold/metal rod was so securely in there maybe i'm not seeing the matrix on this?

You need PN 928112831567266217 horn pad puller. Or just put your fingers under each side (between the spokes) of the pad, and give it a good tug. There is also a wire coming from the center of the steering shaft that attaches to the horn pad. Watch not to damage that.

I think we're confusing the Leather Horn Pad with the internal plastic horn pad with copper conductor and two plastic hooks pictured above.
The leather horn pad is what you'd strike/push with your hand to sound the horn while driving.
Once the leather horn pad is struck/pushed with your hand it forces a flat copper plate onto the other flat copper plat on the internal horn pad pictured above with the two hooks.
