Name this unknown engine reservoir
If you're talking about the tank with the blue cap, that's your coolant expansion tank. It should be filled with coolant up to the Max line. Check for leaks while you're there (the original cap has been known to leak if original).
Indeed that is the coolant expansion tank with the blue cap. Fill with a 50/50 mix of Porsche coolant and distilled water. Did you not notice a blinking light on your coolant gauge? If the coolant was that low, it should have shown a blinking light for low coolant level.

What's puzzling is water temp runs 180, or straight up on the on the display and no warning lights with zero leakage on the garage floor.
Took a quick look at Wayne Dempsey's 996 project book and sure enough there has to be an issue there. I'll have to call the shop to find out what they filled it with so I can keep the formulation the same.
I went through my entire manual and never saw it pictured. I guess since the factory said it would last the life of the car, there's no need to bother with at least a page of documentation and a view of the filler hole.
Thank you to all who responded. I need to get this nipped in the bud ASAP.
I'll check it out. I just had the radiators flushed and new coolant put in a month ago.

If it were me, I'd go down to Wallymart for a couple buks, get a gallon of distilled water, and top it off with a quart or 2. The 50/50 ethylene Glycol / distilled water mix you probably currently have, won't change enough from its -40° below 0° rating to maybe -35° at most with a quart or 2 of distilled water added to the 996_ 6 gal coolant capacity. 50/50 ethylene glycol/water mix has roughly 20% less heat transfer efficiency than pure water, I mix a 60% water/coolant for my S Fl cars..
