Default Gas fumes

'89 944 S2. I get gas fumes inside the car occasionally, but never smell gas anywhere outside the car or under the hood. I do not smell gas more strongly in the hatch area. There is no leak onto the ground and so far although I haven't torn the car apart I can't find anything. Any ideas that would save me some time are appreciated.

Incredibly hard to chase, but I would start by inspecting the fuel filler neck and related hoses.

Examine the top of the fuel level sender, the hoses here can degrade and leak and the hose barbs can crack where they pass through the flange.

I had same issue. Pulled tank, changed hoses etc. Turned out to be the rubber sleeve between the top of the filler neck and the body p/n 931 201 281 02 (on a 968)

have you checked to make sure that the rear hatch seal is doing its job?

I haven't but I am getting gas fumes not exhaust fumes so haven't been leaning that way.

I checked the area around the fuel level sending unit yesterday and there were strong fumes from immediately around the sender. I pulled the sender and although the seal seemed fine I replaced it with one that is fuel grade of cork and rubber in the same thickness. I had to make it, the local Porsche did not have one in stock and I didn't want to wait one week. I just checked my work and there is still a smell there but not as strong. I was gas spilled over the top of the tank from removing the sender so I will give it another day to clear out and drive the car tomorrow. Then I will have a better idea of whether my work fixed the problem.

The fuel filler line that was also suggested is no longer available from Porsche.

It could be a check valve failure that is close to the filler neck for the evap system.

Smelly whit a full tank? The filler neck.
Smelly whit just a little gas in the tank? Especially after being parked for a while? Fuel sender gasket.
(Just my two cents)

Smell is still there. Possibly the o-ring I made isn't working. I've ordered one from Porsche and will have it next week. I'll update then.

I went through all this as well, until I decided to follow the WSM instructions. I even made my own special tool 9190, since it's impossible to tighten the union nut to 35 Nm by hand. Wishing you lots of success!

Well this is interesting. Thank you. I am due to play around with a torch today, I think I will make a tool. There is no way I'm getting it to 26 ft. lb, and I imagine the hot water treatment loosens the fit up and gets things a little tighter before the 26 ft lbs comes up. I should have the new seal next week and may make a tool today.
thank you and I'll post how everything goes.

I had to fill up today and don't have much driving planned. I don't want to do this until the tank is nearly empty so patience everyone for a final post.
