Default Inspecting a 964-4, suggestions

Hi everyone, I went to see a 964 yesterday, it had a hell of a life, and it is in very poor conditions.
My idea is to make a one shot lowball offer and see what destiny (and the owner) has to say
I'm ready to spend money on the car but I want to make sure it is a good base to start from.
The car is being sold by a mechanic I know, on consignment.
I already owned a 964 15 years ago, I know it is a pain and very expensive to mantain, I currently own a magnificient 3.2 and an amazing 996.1 Gt3,
just to say I know porsches quite well, and I'm not just trying to save money, this car speaks to me and would be eager to take it back to a nice shape.

Main issues are :

1) All kind of lights occasionaly turning on and off :
ABS
4wd symbol
Airbag
and the BIg exclamation point
Probably an electrical issue
2) Oil pressure to 0.5 with hot car (it is 95 F now where I am and this might affect)
3) Lack of power under acceleration and frequent and short hesitations, I think it might be a spark plugs issue
4) In the front trunk I see rubber bits that are painted, I think that is a sign of respray ?
5) A strut bar is present and the car is lowered, not an issue but as I know the car never seen a track...sounds strange
6) signs of oil which I think may come from the return pipe and from the case

The real and only concern here is to try to make sure the car has a straight chassis and it may be a good base for a project.
I'm not scared of engine rebuilds, I already rebuilt the 3.2 at Sikkens who did an amazing job and would do the same with this.

A 964-4 in good shape is worth between 75 and 85 grands here in my country, I would offer 50 and be willing to put 30 in the years to come to make it good.

I bought a lousy 964C4 and rebuilt the motor and drive it every day and am happy with my decision. Paint and body are, to me, the only true no-gos. From an utterly uninformed view through my iPad, those look reasonably acceptable to me. 50k for a functionally inoperative C4 is a lowball!? Yowsz.

Thanks.
Yes that's the idea, and I do agree paint and body are the only true no go-gos. Not sure about quotations in the US but here in europe the cheapest 964 goes for 65K and good ones 80-90,some cars start to appear on the market for 100K, the guy is asking 65, if 50 is too much in your opinion, how much would you consider fair ?

I got zero to offer you on that pal, you likely know the market better than I do. I did my engine work myself so my car worked out to be a great deal for what it was.

Looks a little rough, but typical of a driver 964. Market is market. Just go in knowing what you need to address to make it acceptable to you. There is nothing more expensive than a cheap porsche... :-)

Four years ago I paid $50k for a C2 coupe with a windows out full respray and freshly rebuilt motor. I've spent a fair bit more than $30k for suspension, interior, bits and bobs, etc. 50k Euro seems a bit dear for a C4 that needs an engine and all the rest, if the finished value is only going to be around 80k. And if it needs any body work--oof! I'm no expert, but that car seems like a sub-$50k car to start.

In Europe you don‘t even get a driving g-Body (any body type) for 40k€, even for 50k€ it‘s difficult.

964s and coupes are generally more expensive, so I don‘t think there will be any complete 964 coupe for sale sub 50k€ in Europe.

Best regards

How many KM are on the car? I don't know that I would necessarily jump to the conclusion that it needs a rebuild unless the wet engine bothers you. Probably worth doing a compression and leakdown test.

Regarding the poor performance, could be a number of things including spark plugs as you suggest. I'd also note that the distributor vent doesn't appear to be present so its possible the belt is snapped and you're only running off one coil.

It has 140k km (80k miles), it is wet and has lost power over the years, it may be ok for 100k more KM to come, but it feels like a very tired engine, and in my opinion it is usually good to rebuild at this stage rather than taking it further. Also not very fun to drive with that kind of performance.

28GTS is right...it is impossible to get a complete and running G body for under 50k here in europe.

I'm slowly abandoning the idea expecially because it is a C4, but still a part of me thinks it could make a nice daily driver.

That looks awfully rough for 80k miles. I picked up a 90 C4 in 15 with 80k miles abandoned and in poor disrepair and it was a bit nicer. Possible it is TMU? When I see lots of oil on a later engine, pin switches added instead of old ones repalced and hardware missing I suspect you will find a lot of other needs as you dive deeper into it. Don't forget people have been paying 6 figures for cars like this in this condition for Singer and other backdates. So long as there is no accident damage and or critical parts missing everything gets repalced anyhow.

I paid $10k for my C4 in '15, today I would ask $50k for it in the same condition. I have a stripped tub no engine or anything and it is easily worth $20k to the right buyer with title.
